I have been to White Sands and had the difficult task of photographing the stark white namesake sands and try to get them to look good.  These are very nice, but do give a false idea of the sands.  Did you try to brighten them up so they really are white, yet not so much to loose the detail you have captured?  Mine are in color, and before my Leica so not postable here.  This is not meant to be a criticism, but it would be nice to see them high key like the sands really are.  I really do like these.  Did you use a red filter for the sky?

Hehe. This was my 5th trip there since early December, and had varying weather on each trip. One trip was very overcast and cloudy, and EVERYTHING was white to me. Sunglasses did nothing and depth perception was way off. On the clearer days, I felt like the contrast "potential" was there, and mostly used an orange filter. Only time I pulled out a red was the overcast day.

The top of the ridge (swirly part) was insanely bright. Pretty sure I under-exposed 2 full stops from what the M10M metered and had a feeling the sky/mountains would be a dark recovery process in post. This is NOT my favorite version of this picture. I only like this one because the line bisects the image in a somewhat unique, elegant fashion.

I'll give a high-key style a shot, and post a version... likely different composition.

I greatly appreciate the feedback. Thank you.

Phil.  This is an excellent composition and the tones are wonderful.  I do have one question.  Is the "halo" around the dog natural or the result of some spill over from perhaps lightening the dog in post?

Hi Aram, many thanks for your comment and yes this has been bugging me and I believe you are quite correct so was going to have another attempt at the weekend before I get some sent for printing. I try not to do too much post and am still very much learning having recently switched  to Adobe. Less is more I keep reminding myself... and be subtle and more accurate with minor tweaks.

This was the other one I'd set out to hike and find. It's a really neat place if anyone ever gets the chance to make it there. Just be prepared for a TON cleaning of the interior of the car. That gypsum sand gets everywhere.

Credit to @Leica Guy for helping me with this.

Ansel Adams would be proud of your creativity with this image. He spent more time in the darkroom perfecting images than actually taking them. 👏👏👏

This was the image I had in my head, not what what the camera captured. If that makes sense. Took some post to get it to what I wanted. Also felt like the square format was appropriate.

WOW.  Both very nice.  Worth hiking around.  I was there in 2014 on a return trip from the Balloon Fiesta.  I wanted some evening and night shots but the wind was so bad they closed the park.  We camped outside somewhere and went back in the AM for a few shots.  Not with Leica, but here is the link to a few of my efforts:

Trip to Balloon Fiesta (leica-users.org)

As you can see, I took a much more high key approach making the sands very white.  All were originally color with my D750 and converted with LR6.  I tossed a color one in there, too. I might try your approach with darkening the sand so you see more texture and see what I can find.  You must live fairly close to make so many trips there.  It is wonderful place.  Would have loved hiking around a bit more, but we were with my at the time 91 year old father-in-law.  He is now 98 and still dragging around a camera, hiking with us and pulling his 5th wheel around camping.  Planning on a Yosemite trip this May.  He says it is his last, but he has said that before.  Amazing person.

@malfaris  I have found the M10 Mono to be different, but in a good way - different and refreshing.

Is that what you were getting at?  Hope so...

Going out with just BW camera is for sure welcomed new experience . also I am new to street photography as I have been nature and wildlife photographer from the start. and those Leica Ms are really discreet nobody seems to care even pointing at them. also impressed with ISO performance like the one below is around 20k looks nice even the noise looks like film not digital.

Hi

Ansel learned me:

spotmetering on whitest part, +2stops, this gives you white in your picture (there your sensor will give you midgray whitout the +stops)

give it a try - in snow or white sand - and you will see
