Landiah Posted January 16, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have recently acquired a 28mm summilux. Every day I am more reluctant to bring it with me due to it’s size, even though I never thought that something like that would bother me. What are some fast lenses that come with a nice, small size? At my moment my 35 cron rarely leaves my camera but as I mostly shoot film I find that an extra stop of light proves useful.
Advertisement Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Hi Landiah, Take a look here Small, compact lenses. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
vanGeist Posted January 16, 2020 Share #2 Posted January 16, 2020 The usual ones like 35 Lux pre-ASPH, 40 Cron/M-Rokkor.
lct Posted January 16, 2020 Share #3 Posted January 16, 2020 (edited) If you mean faster than f/2, Summilux 35/1.4 pre-asph as suggested above. 35/1.4 FLE is significantly bulkier (pic) and 50/1.4 asph is taller than pre-asph versions. Summilux 35/1.4 aspherical also perhaps but i have no experience with it. Welcome, dear visitor! dem331 Posted January 16, 2020 Share #4 Posted January 16, 2020 I am not sure I understand the previous answer since you say you are looking for a f1.4 lens preferably. The only one I can recommend is the 50 Summilux Asph, which is beautifully and incredibly small for a f1.4 and has a wonderful output. I think the 35mm Summilux Asph is also small but I do not have it.
caissa Posted January 16, 2020 Share #5 Posted January 16, 2020 (edited) The Summilux 35mm 1.4 AA or Aspherical. Edited January 16, 2020 by caissa
RoyB Posted January 16, 2020 Share #6 Posted January 16, 2020 Depends what you mean by fast. If 2.8 is fast enough, a vintage Summaron 35mm 2.8 is small, solid, and sharp. The 50 Lux is smaller than the 28 Lux. Else, Voigtlander has great smaller, faster lenses than the 28Lux and almost as good optical qualities as Leica - Nokton 40 1.2 focuses to 0.5m. I have it and is great! I had the 50 1.2 and was also very good but bigger than the 40 1.2 and focuses to only 0.7m.

Fedro Posted January 16, 2020 Share #8 Posted January 16, 2020 (edited) 35 1.4 and 50 1.4 probably have the smallest/fastest ratio that said, if you find the 28 lux unbearable, I am not sure if you will like the 50 1.4 ASPH which is - at the end of the day - just 110 grams lighter ... spydrxx Posted January 16, 2020 Share #9 Posted January 16, 2020 small size and fast lenses are sort of diametrically opposed
TomB_tx Posted January 16, 2020 Share #10 Posted January 16, 2020 Voigtlander Nokton 35 f1.4. styled much like the original 35 Summilux, nice build quality. Generally not Leica sharpness, and has distortion, but I still get lovely images.
UliWer Posted January 16, 2020 Share #11 Posted January 16, 2020 Size may be relative. 35mm Summiux Asph.(non-FLE) left, 35mm Summiux Asph.(FLE) right: Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! The FLE is fatter, but not longer, Though: do not use a 35mm Summilux without hood!
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! UliWer Posted January 16, 2020 Share #12 Posted January 16, 2020 Both with their proper hood: Welcome, dear visitor! The non-FLE gets much bulkier. 1
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! The non-FLE gets much bulkier. UliWer Posted January 16, 2020 Share #13 Posted January 16, 2020 Though there is an alternative hood for the non-FLE (don't ask for price and availability): Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Still the non_FLE looks bulkier - but have a look though the viewfinder, what you see with one or the other hood.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! UliWer Posted January 16, 2020 Share #14 Posted January 16, 2020 (edited) You really need aspherical lenses? If not, you get it much smaller: 35mm Summilux non-aspherical in the center. Though never ever use this lens without any hood! Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! UliWer Posted January 16, 2020 Share #15 Posted January 16, 2020 (edited) Though the M cannot avoid that you see the hood thorough the viewfinder, obstructing your view. The bulky, big (rare and expensive) 12466 you see on the left for the Summilux asph (non-FLE) is the least obstructive. It doesn't fit the other shown lenses. Second least obstructing is the slim hood for the FLE. Edited January 16, 2020 by UliWer

Really helpful to see them side by side, thank you. Didn't know until now the FLE was fatter. Good to know. To the OP @Landiah the 35 Summilux Pre-ASPH is calling your name. Especially considering you shoot film it should work nicely.

Ecar Posted January 16, 2020 Share #18 Posted January 16, 2020 Luigi, That's a v1 (aka "steel rim"). A v2 should be somewhat "more affordable"... 😅

It isn't the weight of the 28 lux that bothers me. I am more put off by VF blockage and it's width. The lens without the hood is actually quite a nice size.
