Leica CL Full Spectrum conversion for IR.

Recommended Posts

You Tube VideoHello everyone!

I am back with another mod.

This time I converted my Leica CL into a full spectrum camera to use it for infrared photography.

Here is a time-lapse video. I will soon post some photos from the camera.

Hope you like it.

Cool.  I had one of my CL's converted last year by LifePixel, not to full spectrum (although they do offer that) but to what they call "Super Color" (equivalent to 590nm Filter).  It, at the time, was the first CL they ever converted.  I will be curious as to your post processing.  Lightroom has its limits (in regards to color balance) and many use Capture One.

I went a bit crazy with my new skin, but I figured why not.  LOL

I was disappointed to discover that the TL 35 F 1.4 was NOT an ideal IR lens, but many of my other (TL and M) lenses are.

i use DNG profile editor to create a profile for each IR camera, and then apply that in LR

Thanks.  I have done the same, post applying the profile I then edit the file in Silver Effects Pro.  I am still not convinced I am doing it as well as I could.  Do you convert the file to monochrome in Lightroom post applying the profile?

Thanks

Dan

once i import into LR, the raw pinkish colored file turns monochrome once i apply the profile >

THANKS.  As my filter is 590nm, I do not go to fully B&W post the profile.  I can get there, it just takes a bit more work.  The advantage, is that I can capture close to normal, not a huge increase in exposure time.

Still learning.

Sounds cool.

I come from a large format B&W IR film background, but most of those skills do not translate to the digital world.  I love IR photography, so getting into the digital aspect of it.

This is an example using the Sigma 45mm F2.8.  That is a very good IR lens.

IR Hot Spot Testing

SORRY, I was wrong about the Sigma 45mm f2.8 for IR use.  I did a bit (allbeit basic) testing of my (SuperColor) converted CL and this is what I got.

I plan to test my R glass tomorrow.

I ended up getting an M8, not fussing with the conversion, have to filter the lens but I get acceptable exposure times. I did my first experiments with my unconverted CL, exposures were too long, required a tripod, the 23 did really well, but my 25 Canon (Leica thread was awful on the CL). But on the M8 it works really well. Using a 720 filter:

Great.  Although each conversion (based on the filter used) will be diffrent, it is nice to get a feel for which lenses are the best.

The TL lenses I tried are:

18-56mm = pretty good, no white spot;

11-23mm = pretty good, no white spot;

23mm = good until f8 if remember correctly.

To develop the raw I use Capture One and I usually set the white balance with a grey card in camera.

It helps me get the best exposure (ETTR).

If you are interest I can also post the RAW files of the fore posted pics.

I just ordered the Leica apo-macro-elmarit-tl 60mm f/2.8 asph, will be here tomorrow.  Hope it works well for IR, we will see (soon).

      Hmmm!  I have just spent nearly an hour trying to resize each of five photos to fit as close to the .49MB limit as possible.   The first two I have posted look terrible compared to the originals.  There must be a better way.   If there are instructions on the forum on how to do this better, could someone point them to me please?   I wont post any more pics until I get this figured out properly.

      My CL didn't switch automatically between LCD and EVF any more,  so I sent it in.
      As it turned out, the eye-sensor had shifted. Given that the camera just returned from a trip through Tanzania in rather adverse conditions, it was not pristine to put it mildly when sent in and it had received a couple of shrewd knocks, so it came as no surprise that Leica refused guaranty. I did protest gently, but success could not be expected. Anyway, the estimate came to 375 Euro, which I of course accepted.
      However, just now, the camera was evidently opened up for repair and CS revised the cost to 135 Euro. I find that really honest and customer-friendly.

      Greetings!
      Anyone tried to use the little flash unique that comes with the Leica D-Lux 7 package on a Leica CL body?  Would that be compatible?   (just for fill flash purpose)
