The above quote from such a 'learned' man .....

@jaapv -your initial 'guess' at likely 'extra megapixels required' from a Bayered chip was proven with some simple arithmetic ( I assume you are familiar with simple arithmetic ) to be wrong based on your own (revised) newer guesstimates - you were called on that by a previous poster and chose to ignore a simple question...

remember, you were the one who declared that the monochrom was some kind of silliness - an overkill...but conveniently choose not to explain why...

I put that in thinking about a monochrom V a bayered chip  is a worthwhile conversation to be had...

You then proceed to use 'words' to make some kind of argument over 'loss of resolution' as if that means anything to anyone - whilst conveniently skirting the obvious to anyone who actually uses PP to make B&W images - well anyone who doesn't just use the desaturate slider all the way left.

You (reluctantly) agree  that there is in fact no current MP offering high enough from Leica to match the basic functionality fo a monochrom - and that is delivering not only high resolution but also in B&W much higher perceived resolution due to better tonality and contrast...

instead of adding some sort of value to the conversation -  you finish by suggesting I don't know the basics of how Bayer chips 'work' - with a smiley at the end...

look here is a smiley for you and thanks for your 'learned' contribution...

😊

Sorry, you lost me completely here. What , exactly, are you trying to say? Do you think a colour conversion has the same effective resolution as the image from an originally monochrome sensor or not? And if so, why?  Yes, I did not provide exact numbers. Why should I, it doesn't change the argument? And yes, I even think that a 40 MP sensor is vast overkill for all but specialist photography, let alone 40 MP from a monochrome sensor.

However, I don't grudge Leica moving with the market, nor do I condemn buyers for lusting.

In my tests comparing the M10M to the 61-MP Sony a7riv, posted elsewhere in this forum, I indeed observed detail capture by the M10M that was very similar to that of the a7riv.  So 30% resolution loss from the CFA sounds about right.
