Leica R 8/9 Motor Drive Quick Rewind Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hullo Everybody.

I've bought a R8 and a Motor Drive. After rebuilding the Akku Battery Pack at a very inexpensive cost - the Camera seems to work very well. All functions work properly - slides are perfect etc etc.

I'm only trying to use the "R lever" function in front of the Motor Drive (squared in red in picture)  - I suppose is the command for a quick rewind of film when all exposed. Am I right..?

At the end of shooting I move the "R Lever" aside - as indicated - but nothing happens. I tried some combinations with others  levers and knobs and nothing happens neither.

Can anyone give suggestions or instructions or direct to literature / you tube for understanding the "R Lever" on Motor Drive function ?

Thanks in advance to all.

Mauro

Hi Mauro,

Did you press down the rewind release button marked "R" on the camera before trying to rewind with the motor? - Matti

Hullo, Matti..

Thank you for ur interest in my question..

Yes, I pressed down the "r" button by the loading lever on top of camera..

While pressing down the "r" button on top of Camera will normally free the rewind by the crank on the left of Camera - this will not operate any rewind sliding aside the switch on front of Motor Drive..

Curious is that the "Winder R" will rewind back film - not the M. Driver

My R8 Mdrive is the same and I suspect that it's a fault common to a lot of these  motordrive units.

In my experience with R cameras the motordrive units are OK but a bit temperamental.

I must agree with you as a second motor drive I have the "R" lever of Quick Rewind doesn't work neither as supposed. Moreover, the main switch of Motor Drive - where you read C, CL and CH - has differences of a fraction of millimeter from one position to another and after a *long* (?!?!) time has been off it is very capricious  in working..

I agree with you . crazy and unstable working for many of them - this is why some of them are sold at a low price - around the 500 € and not around the 1000 € ..

And Wetzlar has decided to not repair them anymore..

Press the R button on the camera body with your finger.  Press it firmly and deeply and hold it there.

At the same time as pressing the R button on the body, move the R lever on the motor.

On my motor this causes the automatic rewind to engage.  It normally won’t do so otherwise.

Thank you M9reno for ur replay.

Ur way is exactly what I do. Therefore I believe it won't ever work that way. I will use the crank on the left of camera.

Bye

      Hallo zusammen,

      Hallo,
unter welchem Menuepunkt kann man beim DMR-Rückteil
      die Firmware-Version abfragen??
In der Bedienungsanleitung wird darüber nichts geschrieben.
      Danke!

Hi all - excited to be posting in the R forum for the first time.

Q for all DMR users: what are some of the things to look for when buying one? I can think of a few such as sensor condition, battery charge, etc. but please share with me some of other things to watch out for from your experiences.

A bit of back ground for those interested -
As the title suggests, I am actively searching for a DMR outfit. Ever since I started looking into the system I was mesmerized by the excellent photos from Thorsten, the flicker group and of course the album thread in this forum. I was also enchanted by the styling of the camera and that 'analog digital' feel which a Leica M user like me can really appreciate. And with film not being an option (too time consuming for me), it seems the only way for me to enjoy the R system in its native platform is the DMR.

Thank you so much in advance for all your help,

I am sure that this has been posted before, but a few days ago, I wish I had recently seen (and remembered) such a post.

On vacation, shooting 3-8 rolls/day. After 1 week, the digits of the shutter speed and frame number start flashing at random. I checked the camera carefully, all settings are as usual. Also, sometimes, the shutter speed in the viewfinder did not match that on the shutter speed dial by a 1/2 step, but resets back and match again by setting the shutter speed to "B" and back. Two days later, the Motor Drive ... does not drive anymore. If wound up manually, the R9 shoots normally.

That's when I thought to take the Motor Drive off, then put it back on again. Everything is back to normal again!

I knew that the contacts between the R9 and the Motor Drive were critical. I just never had experienced that problem before and was not aware of the "presenting symptoms".

I hope this can help someone else with an R9 (R8?) and a Motor Drive (Motor Winder?).

      Guy
