Black paint chipped out of nowhere on m7...silver underneath?

I just bought a mint/near mint m7 on eBay.   I took the camera out of my bag yesterday and there was a paint chip showing silver underneath .  Is this normal since its a brass top? Has this happened to other peoples? I am over thinking it but i wanted to keep the resale value high. My friend said it might not be brass?

If you are asking me - who knows, your guess is as good as mine. The black chrome finish is pretty tough and this is not common as far as I know - others may chip in (sorry) with other advise.

I understand this is disappointing for you,and I feel this, but unless you have option to return camera, which I expect is unlikely now, I would forget it and enjoy the camera. If everything else about the camera is good then that is more important for you. Just see it is as a bit of your personal customisation.

I've never seen black chrome chip before.

Are you sure it isn't black paint?

But black paint cameras should show brass if chipped...

This is what my friend said . But the guy above said it should show silver . I’m a bit confused is it a fake top?

Ok - what the 'guy above' said was it is probably the plating that comes between the brass and the black chrome. Painted cameras (of which this isn't one, at least when it left the factory) do not have or need this plating and they wear to show brass.

Just trying to help you and you can see my username so please be polite.

It is not a "fake top". The levels of both paranoia and finickiness in this forum seem to be reaching record levels.

If you were to file the top of an M7 you will initially expose 'silver' before reaching the brass. I think the silver is a thin layer of nickel (or something like that) which is used to plate the brass before the black chrome finish is applied. Black paint is applied straight on the brass so there is no intermediate silvery layer.

You really should pay a bit more attention to what is written here. "The Guy Above" and wattsy have both taken the time to explain the difference between the layers used for black chrome and black paint finishes.

To recap:

Back paint -> brass

Black chrome -> nickel (or something like that) platting -> brass
