Frosty winter morning (2) - VE 24-90mm - multishot mode as I was aiming for 3:1 pano, the remaining file is still 90MP...Also, what I found rather interesting was that multishot did work here with a rather slow shutter speed of 0.4sec (and yes, of course multishot is completely meaningless for posting pics on the web...)

I must admit that I`ve always been a bit doubtful about the SL2s ability to render avian shots the way I like them. It`s cinematic rendering wasn`t quite to my taste . I prefer the sharper rendering of the Sony cameras but that Canon 400 DO seems to combine the best of both worlds . I`m familiar with the Mark One version of that lens having owned two copies in the past .The Mark two is a big step up and I`d be very happy with that shot . Are you preferring it to the Sigma ?

Hi Michael,  IMO there's something quite special about the image rendering of the SL2 & Canon 400mm f2 vers.2 combination. I've repeated this often on this Forum, it's probably the best telephoto lens I've ever used; I've owned a few incl. the Leica APO R 280mm f4 & still have the Carl Zeiss 300mm f2.8 Tele APO-Tessar monster.

As for the Sigma 150-600mm, it's an excellent lens, great value, really versatile, good reach & sharp. At short to medium+ range the Sigma is very good. Where the Canon pulls ahead, as it would against any zoom, is at the much longer subject distances. I've noticed this especially on the SL2, on the SL2-S it's less noticeable. This probably has something to do with the 47MP sensor on the SL2,  it's less forgiving maybe? I tend to use the Sigma on the SL2-S & the Canon on the SL2.

Here's an image of a Night Heron taken with the Sigma 150-600mm L @ 600mm & SL2-S, shot at a similar subject distance as the image of the Cuckoo with the Canon in my post above. You can see that the Sigma's right up there in terms of IQ. It's difficult to tell them apart.

Michael, following on from our discussion about the differences between the Canon 400mm & Sigma 150-600mm, I came across an image of the same Cuckoo that I forgot I had taken with the SL2-S & Sigma 150-600mm as well.

For comparison here are the 2 images:

Goodness .... there isn`t much in that is there .

Even with a side by side comparison .

Thanks very much ... the Sigma ,especially at that price point , is very worth a try .

Nice image - and a positive message!

Regarding SL2 and SL2-S: Any preference for your use? I sold the SL2 since I have resolution covered by S3 (although S3 is not a wild life camera), and changed to SL2-S for longer lenses, low light, etc. I appreciate many aspects of SL2-S, including it's colour rendering.
