I couldn't resist.....  SL2 & Sigma 100-400mm L   @ 400mm hand held @ 1/20s

I'm finding that with lenses which have an OIS On/Off switch I'm getting much better results if the OIS switch is set to Off & rather use only the camera's IBIS.

I wonder if the Lens' OIS & the Camera's IBIS are somehow cancelling each other out or working against each other?

I'm not into the details, but IBIS+OIS is likely focal length dependent. Canon/Nikon rely on OIS for long lenses, the argument being (I believe) that sensor shifts are too small to fully compensate for lens movement on a long tele. For IBIS+OIS to work in tandem, both systems need to be  synchronised, and for a zoom, at all  focal lengths. It could be that Leica and Panasonic mange to combine their own body+lens systems to fully utilise IBIS+OIS, but its not given that this is the case when Leica and Panasonic is combined, despite the L-mount alliance.

+1

Would venture to guess that with Sigma 100-400 being relatively recent release that Sigma and Leica have not coordinated IBIS+OIS optimisation for that lens, that is assuming they even plan to do so. Presumably any such coordination would need to be reflected via firmware updates and there is no indication that this has taken place.

For L-Mount alliance to go to the “next level” Leica, Panasonic and Sigma need to venture into the area of coordinated firmware updates pre and post product release.

Whether they are motivated to do so or chose to strictly favour the optimisation of their own products, remains to be seen. The true test of an alliance and glowing vision statements is largely dependent on whether the parties are willing to forgo short term gain in the service of long term value add for all which implies putting the collective customer first.

That’s a pretty big ask in these expedient and profit driven times, although it must be said Leica in particular has the best record of almost any company in taking the long term view, so there is hope.

Time will tell...In business and in life actions always speak louder than words.

Thanks Helge, your synchronisation explanation makes sense. I've always suspected that there's something like this going on, as I've had no blurring issues with the LEICA VE 90-280mm L mounted on the SL2.

When I had the S1R I had noticed a similar slight blur in images whenever I had the LEICA VE 90-280mm L mounted, as is now the case with the Sigma 100-400mm L on the SL2.  I've noticed enough of a pattern of slightly blurred images when using a non-Leica L mount lens on the SL2  that I now turn off either the IBIS or OIS. I'll run a few test images to determine which one of the two should be turned off in order to achieve best results. However based on what you say about the sensor shifts being smaller, it would probably make sense to turn the camera's IBIS off & leave the lens' OIS on.
