Alternative hood for LTM 35/3.5 Summaron

I have an offer of a clean Summaron 35mm f3.5 screw mount lens, but I am unsure whether to buy this without having a suitable lens hood. I understand that the correct hood is quite difficult to find. Does anyone know a suitable alternative to the original, please?

I have access to a specialist engineering workshop so I could have commonly available Leitz items adapted; however I don't wish to start from scratch.Your thoughts much appreciated ... thanks. Alan (UK)

I use a 12504 hood with mine (used on both a f2.8 Summaron and the f3.5 version)

If I have one, they can't be either hard to find, or expensive :)

(Edit: Just done a google for Leica Hood 12504. There are few on eBay (tatty), but a decent one seems to go for about $100. Which is much more than I would have thought - I am sure I bought mine for about fifteen quid :) )

Andy, thanks. It sounds like you have the later Summarons, for which I gather the 12504 is normally listed(?). I'm considering buying an earlier A36 version lens which would be more-or-less contemporary with my IIIf. I gather the lens can be quite flarey without a hood.

My thoughts were drifting towards re-engineering a FISON or A36 clamp-on filter which would (theoretically) only involve cutting these down and fitting a cone-shaped shade. The 'precision' engineering is not a problem. Alternatively, I could try to find an SOOGZ (money!) A36 filter adapter, etc, that will accept a standard-sized (39/43/etc) filters and then step up to a popular hood size. This however becomes a 'kludge' and there are risks of vignetting/cut-off, and the time/effort/money may be better spent on a finding a genuine hood.

Or I'll just stay with the 35mm Skopar. Cheers, Alan

Are you sure you cannt find an original one ? I have it (FOOKH/12505) and paid no much for it (lot of years ago...), and besides it there is also the variable hood named FIKUS (3,5 to 13,5) that I have often seen for sale (3 or 4 for sale today at www.leicashop.at, they have also a FLQOO for Elmar 3,5 A36, fits also the Summaron A36 (very similar to FOOKH, black), a little costly, but interesting, uncommon.

Well, I have seen a FOOKH for 65 GBP, from a dealer, though I haven't yet decided if I should buy. It would be cheaper if I bought it together with a Summaron (only 49 GBP), but that particular lens is rather worn. Anyway I might be in Vienna/Wein next week so I can have a look. Thanks.

Just scored an SOOGZ for my Summaron 35 f3.5 LTM - what a handy little device - can now use my 39mm filters on the lens plus the 12585 & 12504 hoods fit nicely into the central groove on the SOOGZ

Will there be any vignetting with either of these hoods ie are they appropriate for this lens? I really don't want to buy a FOOKH (12505) hood if either of these will suffice.

There is a replica hood for Elmar 35mm available which supposedly is made out of brass. I bought one but it's still shipping so can't tell anything about the quality.

It should fit a 35mm summaron I believe.

You can find it on the auction site under this title "New Metal Lens Hood for Leica Leitz M39 Elmar 3.5cm 35mm f/3.5 1:3.5 Lens"

I've been using a SGOOZ with a cheap Chinese flared lens hood on several of my lenses in the last year...no vignetting that I've noticed AND it accommodates 39mm filters

... I thought the IROOA would do but seems to be for the M mount lens.

IROOA is for the Summarons with E39 filter Mount : they exist also in screw Mount, but most of the Summaron 35 SM are of the "old" A36 filter Mount  (see under to illustrate - E39 at left, A36 at right))

Thanks everyone. I haven’t realised that the different mounts (TLM / M ) would have also different lens size where the hood is attached.

will by the Chinese replica as the SOOGZ or original is more than £150.

The correct lenshood for the 35mm f3.5 Elmar or Summaron with the old A36 size front is the FOOKH. It fits some other A36 front lenses as well and you can use it on 50mm lenses to avoid carrying a FISON as well.

The Summaron has an aperture ring behind the front of the lens so the hood doesn’t get in the way of adjusting it. It is the Elmar that has the fiddly aperture control on the front of the lens.

both screw lenses take the same A36 size hoods and filters.

I found a Summaron some time ago with a really nice little plug-in rubber sun visor.
Unfortunately I can't say anything about the manufacturer. I have never seen them before.

The diameter of the insert metal ring is 33.5mm.
