My Leica & 4 lenses were stolen

Recommended Posts

Advertisement (gone after registration)

Sadly, my Leica M10-P and 4 lenses were stolen in Los Angeles California, and I wanted you to have the items and serial numbers in case they are somehow sold to you. The thieves do not really appreciate what they have and I'm hoping time will be on my side. The items have been on eBay and the attached image is from their ad...... I have all receipts and serial #sand police report!

 Thank you for your help!

  • Leica M10 P, black #5849339
  • 50mm Summilux silver #04753690
  • 90mm Summicron silver #3688728
  • 35mm Summilux black #4721286
  • 28mm Elmarit Black #11677
  • Leica Visoflex #18767
  • Leica Adapter #14652

The robbers have put an e-bay ad ? Can't the police recover them with that ? I suppose you can ask the web site for location and other data or I'm mistaken ?

Unfortunately, privacy keeps eBay from providing contact information. At this point the police can't seem to do anything which is pretty amazing. thanks for thinking about it

Hello Michael,

Welcome to the Forum.

I am sorry for your situation.

Something does not seem correct here.

You should also contact Leica in Wetzlar, Germany & explain this to them. Their contact information is on their Leica Camera Website.

Given that you have your bills of sale, etc & that you have filed a Police Report: What reason do the Police give for not doing something?

Hopefully your cameras & all else will be back safe & sound soon.

Best Regards,

Michael

Send an email to Leica with the serial numbers. If they ever get them for adjustment or repair they seize them.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Is there no way a complaint can be filed against eBay? Or at least tell cops that the items are on eBay so that they can investigate?

Backpack, some smart criminal grabbed it when I was distracted getting other items out of the car. Don't blink your eyes – guy probably felt like he won the lottery, hope he fell down and bumped his head

Found the items on Ebay - I tried (as you no doubt have) but it doesn't seem possible to post a publicly viewable question/feedback etc to call them out as stolen........

So the bottom feeders that run ebay would rather protect a criminal than assist a victim of theft, huh?  Absolutely amazing.

Given the dollar amount involved, this is felony theft.  I am not an attorney, but it seems that ebay could face obstruction of justice and accomplice after the fact charges, or at least be sued in a civil litigation. Perhaps seeking legal counsel would be a good idea.

Is your equipment insured?

I’m on EBay UK and I can’t find the listing through the worldwide filter, but if you can see the listing, scroll down to “About the Seller” then select “report this item”  and complete the form.  Ebay can and do remove the auction at the very least.

I used to regularly report fraudulent  auctions that broke Ebay rules and would probably have resulted in financial loss to the successful bidder.  Those auctions are uncommon now, but you should get the auction removed.

good luck.

@Herr Barnack

Ebay may actually be working behind the scenes to resolve this. They have a clear interest in not being involved directly or indirectly in criminal activity. But they're probably not going to discuss it while an investigation is pending.

I was unwittingly involved in some Ebay fraud years ago. Someone used a stolen paypal account to purchase a lens of mine. Ebay was initially cagey, but did communicate and help out once it was clear I didn't do anything wrong.

The FBI couldn’t get access to Apple’s security protocols for the iPhone to track terrorists post 911. The local police will fair much worse with eBay I suspect.

What a shame to have your gear stolen. Keeping my fingers crossed for a miracle for you.

Yes.  The sale listing has disappeared, but there is no sign of a completed auction, so Ebay may have removed it to investigate and avoid further fraud.

this is upsetting to me, yet another platform company, be it EBay, FB, Twitter, YouTube suggesting they have zero control of content, they ‘just’ provide the platform, profit from it, but cant be responsible for users’ actions.  As an Ebay buyer/seller, tempting to register complaint that this is not acceptable and drives my business elsewhere.

I hope that you had insurance on your gear.

I have about $60k in Leica M10 bodies, and SL body, SL zooms and M primes. I have all items scheduled on a separate insurance policy added to my homeowner's insurance. It costs be about $500 a year, but worth the peace of mind. The policy covers theft, accident and drops (operate inflicted).

Ebay is useless, I recently had a buyer use the forced return policy to steal a lens. eBay just sides with buyer. I have filed the case with Police but since its in Hong Kong I doubt anything will ever happen.

      Hello,
I am new to Leica and this forum so apologies if this question has been addressed before.
I am shooting on an M10-P w/ most current firmware updated. The question I have is when I shoot on the Elmarit 100mm APO Macro lens, the camera will not focus peak. I am using the lens with the Leica R Adapter M on the M10-P since its obviously an R mount lens. All of the other lenses don't have this problem. Is this a "live with it" problem?
      Cheers,
      cl.

Capture One 20  does not appear to support the M 10-P (or -D).  My guess now is that they never will. I twice asked their tech support about supporting the M10-P. the response always was that they would “put it on the request list.” But It’s their policy not to tell users anything about upcoming features or camera support.
I have been using the Generic DNG profile. This works, but has several annoying inconveniences. Has anyone created an M10-P  profile that works better than the Generic?
I’m also now forced to consider switching to another Raw processor.  I have happily used Capture One for 12 years. But if they are not going to support my camera, why should I pay for upgrades? What are good alternatives? Other than anything by Adobe – I refuse to have my work held hostage to my paying a rental fee every month for the rest of my life.
