ECohen Posted December 22, 2019 Share #21 Posted December 22, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) So do you think that’ll work? And then Leica will a lower it’s prices to pre tariffs rates? Perhaps it’s just a tax on us rich Americans who will buy Leica no matter what the price. Lets face it 2k for a 50 mm lens. Who cares if it’s $2500. Edited December 22, 2019 by ECohen

Taxing wine and cheese is a perfectly appropriate response to the French taxing the US' digital marketplace companies, which France doesn't have. Taxing Leica products is also a perfectly appropriate response to Germany not paying its fair share to NATO. It is what it is. Not appropriate by any stretch. What is Leica supposed to do? Go yell at the German government and make them pay what is due to support NATO? Not going to happen. Or maybe if Leica's customers in America write torrents of letters of protest to the German government we will be able to shame them into paying to support NATO?? Yeah, right. 🙄 Quote "...but in this context the point of tariffs is to influence behavior." Will the penalty levied against Leica influence the behavior of the German government? Doubtful in the extreme. Quote "So do you think that’ll work? And then Leica will a lower it’s prices to pre tariffs rates? Not everyone who buys Leica is a so-called "rich American." I would imagine that more than a few people care. If there was a snowflake's chance in hell of this tax on we supposed "rich Americans" of making the German government pull its own weight in regard to supporting NATO, it might be different. Doubtful in the extreme. Yes, that is exactly how it is supposed to work. Governments are sensitive to the impact on its industries as a whole, bc they employ their voters. One affected company certainly won’t make an impact, but you have to look at the big picture (pun intended). Just look at how the French react if and when we tax their wine and cheese....

The griping is also by the US customers who pay the tax, just as with US Leica buyers. We’ll see if those complaints similarly influence US behaviors, or voters, as you say. Two way street. ECohen Posted December 22, 2019 Share #25 Posted December 22, 2019 "Not everyone who buys Leica is a so-called "rich American."" Leica is for the most part a rich mans camera ....get real. You can buy a lot more camera for a lot less money. If all you want to do is make sharp photographs. Make a poll.... see who is honest. Takes a lot of disposable income to be a Leica guy. Jeff Yes of course many people will be convinced into thinking that tariffs are counterproductive. But for many reasons as a “long view” matter this isnt true for the country that holds the biggest stick.
