I just bought a Tokyo Optical Company 50mm f3.5 Simlar. A close clone of the Elmar, right down to having the serial number in the same position as the Elmar. Not much on the internet about them other than that they were sold with/for Leotax cameras in the late 40’s early 50’s.

These are copies of four darkroom prints from the Tokyo Optical Co Simlar. It seems as good as any other 1950’s Coated Elmar type lens.

You could look at Nikkor lenses, such as the 35mm f2.5 or f3.5, or at the collapsible Nikkor 50mm f2, or the 28mm f3.5.

There’s also the Red scale Elmar that everyone mentioned and I have to say, this lens amazed me when I first tried it, so sharp considering the age.

In terms of 1930s~1950s lenses that are similarly compact, I’d say your choices are very limited. I do think that the Elmar performs better than the Summars, Summarits, Summicron Collapsible if we’re simply looking at sharpness. These lenses are more suited for portraits and offer you a unique rendering, but I don’t think they match the Elmar performance.

The wide lenses from Leica, although tiny, are not at the same level of performance as the 50mm Elmar.

Other options, that are more modern and should offer you sharp results are the Voigtlander 28mm f3.5, the Rollei Sonnar 40mm f2.8, the UC-Hexanon 35mm f2, and the Voigtlander Heliar 50mm f3.5.
