SonomaBear Posted October 3, 2019 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought a 1958 Summaron 2.8/35 with goggles. Using it on a mirrorless, I would like to remove the goggles and save them in the lens' original box. I may never sell this lens but my estate probably will (hopefully a long time from now)! How do I safely remove the goggles and retain all of the original fasteners? Welcome, dear visitor! a.noctilux Posted October 3, 2019 Share #2 Posted October 3, 2019 Try to just unscrew the top chrome thumb screw. It was for the purpose, you don't need any tool, just your thumb&another finger 😉.

a.noctilux Posted October 4, 2019 Share #4 Posted October 4, 2019 (edited) You are welcome 👍 It works then. ... remember to take the cap off before use 😇 Edited October 4, 2019 by a.noctilux
SonbomaBear Posted October 8, 2019 Share #5 Posted October 8, 2019 Lens arrived today and it is a great image maker. The "goggles" do not budge when the top screw is untightened. Untightened, the goggles have very small wobble, perhaps for fine alignment with rangefinder windows. In looking closely, I feel that the two metal screws facing forward should be removed. From the rear of the goggles, you see the channel suggesting that they will slide off when the two metal screws are removed... I need to be brave and gently test these screws - unless someone here has removed goggles before! Welcome, dear visitor! jdlaing Posted October 8, 2019 Share #6 Posted October 8, 2019 Once that top screw is loose you should be able to wiggle the eyes off.
Michael Geschlecht Posted October 8, 2019 Share #7 Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello SonomaBear, The "goggles" on the 35m, F2.8, Summaron are designed to be removable by the user for storage when not on the camera. You should NOT loosen the screws. If the "goggles" do not come off easily then you might consider looking at the instructions for doing so in an older Leica Manual or asking a repair person to help you. NO forcing should be necessary to remove the "goggles" either. And, please remember: Lenses are like people: If you force them: You are probably doing something wrong. If worse comes down to worse you can simply leave the "goggles" on the lens until you find someone to help you. jaapv Posted October 8, 2019 Share #8 Posted October 8, 2019 On lenses with removable goggles you can only slide them off with the lens locked at infinity.

jaapv Posted October 8, 2019 Share #10 Posted October 8, 2019 The infinity lock on the focusing lever is supposed to click in.
Ko.Fe. Posted October 8, 2019 Share #11 Posted October 8, 2019 Slide focus tab(pin) into metal plate which is visible on your last picture.
SonomaBear Posted October 8, 2019 Author Share #12 Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) Thanks everyone. I'm afraid that my 3.5/35mm is just a tad older (#1,562,457 early 1958) ... with focus button rather than the tab on the 2.8/35mm. UPDATE: Mine is SOONC-MW with M3 goggles The 2.8 has a proper tab with focus lock tab - (see Ken Rockwell's picture below) -versus - the "Button" on the 3.5/35mm which has no lock tab. (see above). Also I've noticed that the rear of the goggles slide-in has two protrusions forming a channel in the rear of the mount -- leading me to believe that the goggles will exit forward from lens -- unless (see picture #1 at top) the front bottom plate of the goggles will slide backwards through the channel. Time to search for Leica lens manuals... Thanks again! Henry Welcome, dear visitor! SonomaBear Posted October 8, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted October 8, 2019 The SOONC-MW apparently does not have a infinity lock. Here is a cross-section where we see that the focus tab is immoveable. I'm still digging for a cross-section of the goggles... Welcome, dear visitor! If you don't find documentation for this lens and still don't figure out how to remove the goggles, try to find documentation for the dual range summicron. The mecanism to detach the goggles is quite similar in both but really, once you cared of the top screw, just focus to infinity and slide the goggles forward. Thank you Jul, Ko.Fe., and the marvelous jaapv ... and a true bonus: without the goggles, a pin comes up when focused at Infinity and it locks! Push down the pin and focus closer! I am a very happy man...
