I am in the lucky situation to own both cameras - M4-P and M6, they are still now, and this is 30 years after I bought them, great and reliable cameras. But I need to admit that @mnutzer above is right, with the built in light meter of the M6 you are faster compared with the handling of the MR-4 Leicameter or another external light meter.

Agreed. Bought my M4 in 1968 & M6 in 1985. My heart is with the M4, but I usually reach for the M6. I also like my M5, but the M6 meter readout is much faster to use in all kinds of lighting.

I've been using the M4-P without the Leicameter (I broke down and just bought one: arriving later this week). I've used an iphone app to get a sense of light. But really, on a sunny day: ISO 100 f/8 1/500; adjust to taste. One senses that there's a fall-off of 2-3 f/stops in shade; that dawn and twilight need more attention, as does sudden cloud cover. But all in all, this is the way I used to shoot when I was a kid, and I'm really enjoying being unteathered from electronics.

I'm late to the conversation. Perhaps, the OP has already made a decision...IDK.

I have both the M6 and M4-P and to me, they're the same camera. One with a light meter and one without.

Sure, there are a few obvious cosmetic differences but these are insignificant.

The only real difference between them is the light meter....and the price.

So I guess you have to ask yourself, is that built in light meter worth the roughly, $800~$1000 price difference?

I love my M4-P.

Has all what i need. All framelines for all lenses ( they are very thin) Near the M3 it feels like a lightweight. No worry about zinc problems. The viewfinder for me is big enough.

Zinc problems? What are those?

I’ve had my M6 since 1985, and an R4 (also zinc top plate) longer than that. Both have had a lot of use, and no sign of any finish issues. I think the worry about zinc parts is greatly overblown.

What do you mean? Both M6 and M4-P were available in black and chrome finish.

Yes I know. 😉 In addition, the M4-p is usually much cheaper.

When you buy something you look at different components.. 🤔

My black M4-P has a small cluster of tiny bubbles near the shutter release button....amazingly, I've never noticed any effect on the the photos made with the camera. They just do not show up on the film !   :D

I don't understand, how does that relate to:

I also liked M4-P better because I wanted a black Analog M.
