Matlock, I am not sure what point you are making. When it is pressed, the bottom of the button release for the infinity stop touches the adapter. The adapter is within one percent of the correct thickness of 1mm. (1mm is my assumption: it is not likely to be wrong, surely. What would be the point of Leitz specifying a tiny difference from a round figure?) The wedge shaped entry into the stop is deeper than on my other lenses. The resulting space between the 'wedge' and the adapter is very slightly too small to allow the 'button' to pass through. With the exception of the adapter, all parts are Leitz and the adapter is the correct thickness. In what way would the correct Leitz adapter help?

In fact, I have now fixed the problem. The focus moves to infinity with a slight but satisfying click.

If the bottom of the infinity stop touches the adaptor then you are using the wrong adaptor, the correct adaptor has a long cutout to clear the lock. Later adapters lack that cutout.

I don't think that issue with "whatever adapters".

But in my decades of use working LTM to M adapters are those Leitz which had not been "abused" (which I uncountered sometimes with those second hand adapters).

Second choice, if we can obtain new, Voigtlander adapters are nicely machined, made with well choosen metallic alloy, with accurate dimensions.

 

I've used "noname" (or lesser brand) adapters which can work but mostly very desappointed behaviors ( poorly made of "soft metal" even in aluminium with variable dimensions, etc.).

If we have respect in our LTM lenses and the M body, we must use only good (not abused over time) second hand Leitz adapters or new Voigtlander.

I think that is a wise remark.

But why not, like is done by owners of Japanese LTM lenses including 50/3.5 'Elmars', to file off a small part of the infinity lock, so the lever is easy to use (and lock is not tight)?

I thought - that the lens will only (un)mount when having infinity lock in place, that otherwise you will see the lens with its LTM screw mount getting screwed out (up). But no, I tried on Canon 35mm: the housing here can be grabbed to be turned (not on the focus ring), and the lens/bayonet unmounts. The 'stickyness' of lens/adapter surface  is the primary requirement. 

  • Are there any pictures of an LTM lens (say Summaron 35 or Elmar 50) from the side, so it is clear how their focus tab pin position really is? If not pin, it looks more like a washer that is pushed. 
  • My question is: do they stay touching the adapter all the time, that is along the whole focus movement?
  • Because Thomas here as I understand just filed off at one position where the lock lower expansion is .  @thomas_schertel

I just got an Elmar 50/3.5, had been “almost new in box” for >50 years. Well ok it had been used a bit and at first I also could not get it to unlock with an adapter/cutout.

It just would not go low enough. I thought it hit the camera at the bayonet (at the cutout); but after some time I reasoned it maybe was grease in the knob/plunger. By turning the knob to and fro while pushing it down I managed to get the thick grease to soften an spread, so now it works. The knob went lower (by tens of microns…) - I can now easily (un)lock. It also works on a second adapter. You might even put a drop of solvent there.
