Revisiting the light leak on the M cameras when taking a long exposure with the Naughtlux

Guys

Back in the day when I first got my first Noctilux and took some shots of a waterfall in Kashmir, I was horrified to see that there was a service light leek coming in from the bottom. After testing at home the outcome was that the Noctilux is too heavy for the M240 (at that time) bayonet connection causing a severe light leak...........I contacted Leica in Berlin and nothing more was said. What I did do after that was to use one of my wife black crunchy hair grip to put over the connection and that did the trick. I am now getting ready to head to Scotland and the Lake District and will hopefully see some nice long exposure opportunities. So my question to the gang is this Have any of you who own a M10 and Noctilux seen similar light leek when taking long exposures.

If there is a problem it might be camera specific, so why not test before you leave. Why would you want to use the Noctilux for landscapes anyway?

Dreamy milky waterfall with a blurred background in broad day light that's why! 😂😂

All kidding aside, I could see it being used for shooting the stars maybe? Though I'm not sure if the softness at f/1 is worth the loss of 1 or 2 stops with say a Summilux or Summicron APO.

light leakage during long exposures is caused by the bayonet of the camera. Simply shield it of by using a rubber band or you're own hand. I use a tie-wrap around the lens and the bayonet and that solved the problem.

good luck

I don’t understand why Leica wouldn’t fix this problem though. I’ve sent an old 35CronIV for adjustments and CLA with my M10, they’ve found a crack on the lens code reading glass which i wasn’t aware of, and fixed it for free. So I’m surprised they don’t or reject to fix it.

I had my Noctilux snap off at the bayonet one time............sent back to Berlin from Kuala Lumpur and fixed for free within 2 weeks

Fabulous service

Why they don’t fix this light leak issue then?

I guess it can't be fixed.....saying that maybe my M10 has an upgraded light safe bayonet.......hence the new thread

I slipped while walking back from shooting a waterfall. The camera was around my neck but I am guessing that the jolt of me slipping was enough for it to detach itself from the bayonet that was still attached to the body.
