3.1 Firmware update disaster?

And have a IV into my bank account for subscriptions and cloud usage. So much for my boxes of binders full of negs and contact sheets that will last a hundred years, at minimum. Not so sure about my digital images. They will evaporate as soon as the next tech comes along. I'm surprise those over the age of 50 don't see the danger in losing history and longevity based on what you can afford as time moves on. Pretty soon all we'll have is what happened yesterday for the most of us. We just accept it because we have exceptional images in a small package? 

As usual, tech runs faster than humanity's ability to cope with it.

Well, I have drawers full of prints and negatives and slide boxes without end... Most slides, except Kodachrome, have gone all weird in colour, the prints are sepia on brown, and the negatives are unfindable and will succumb to moisture in the end. I rather prefer a few HDDs in the safe, which only need to be copied every five years or so.

Yep, I have a drawer full of negatives in a similar state. The benefit of digital is that as long as the negatives are not too far gone, you can correct the colour again when scanning. I have scanned everything analogue now, but had to scan prints in the case of images for which the negatives had suffered too much from humidity and sticking to the holders.

Image preservation is an interesting problem. I would expect jpgs to last well, but only as long as they're on readable media. The backup tapes from my old company, made in 1999, are unreadable now without shelling out for a specialist tape reader service - and then reading Wordperfect and Quattro files and the Pascal language.

The lens firmware was updated by the camera the second time I turned it on after the update. As already remarked before.

That has been my experience too, possibly the first example of a firmware update incorporating separate instructions for both body and attached lenses. There is no need to change a lens. If after a firmware update a lens also needs updating, it will do so the next time you fit that lens to an updated body.

Certainly not the first. My camera updated the lens firmware on first startup when new.

Possibly, but I cannot recall seeing a message on screen announcing such an event for a lens after a firmware update.

I don't think that there is anything to fix. Lenses and cameras are integrated by software nowadays. Change the camera software --> adapt the lens software...🙄

My camera did the lens update the second time I restarted it as well. I thought I'd done something wrong and messed up the procedure but it seemed fine.

Considering the number of users not expecting this behaviour,  I feel that Leica should have included the information within the instructions.

I still work with WordPerfect and Quattro files. The former has endured longer than Microsoft programmes and allows easy visibility and editing of formatting codes.
