JPizzzle Posted July 1, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 1, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey all, I’m in the process of choosing between a black or silver APO lens for a silver m10p. However, I can’t seem to find any pics of the black APO on a silver m10p body. Would someone be so kind as to post a pic of their setup? Thanks, JP

RexGig0 Posted July 1, 2019 Share #5 Posted July 1, 2019 (edited) Lighter colors seem to really matter here, under the southern Texas sun. Of course, the color of my lenses is, really, moot, as all of my Leica cameras are all-black. Edited July 1, 2019 by RexGig0
JPizzzle Posted July 1, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted July 1, 2019 I like silver, but for me it would a savings of $2500 to get a good condition black vs new silver. I just wanted to get an idea of the look.
Peter Kilmister Posted July 1, 2019 Share #7 Posted July 1, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Also consider the weight. Check the specs on the Leica website. I have one silver lens, a 35mm Summicron, which for its size is quite heavy. All my other lenses are black.

APO 50 in silver is aluminum versus brass and therefore the weight is close if not identical to the black version.
Herr Barnack Posted July 1, 2019 Share #9 Posted July 1, 2019 JMHO, but the only combination that looks a little odd is a silver lens on a black body.

Only the chrome on brass lenses are heavier than the black versions, and this isn't one.

I had a 50 Cron rigid (which is only available in silver) on my black M10 for quite a time and loved the look.
JPizzzle Posted July 2, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted July 2, 2019 Quick questions: would you guys buy a like new certified preowned model vs new to save $1400? I think the main difference is a 2 vs 3 year warranty, and that the CPO is a demo.
Peter Kilmister Posted July 2, 2019 Share #14 Posted July 2, 2019 Warranty on a lens is like warranty on a Televid Spotting Scope. If it works when you get it it will work forever. There are so few moving parts and no electronics to pose problems. People buy lenses so old they have no guarantee. How many problems have been found? How many problems have been found? Peter, thanks for your reply. I’m thinking the same, as it’s not like a digital camera that can have various issues. The dealer made the point though that the new lens would come with the passport warranty which would cover accidental damage in the US vs the CPO warranty which would cover defects. I couldn’t find anything online regarding the passport and accidental damage. Maybe they’re pulling my chain?
Peter Kilmister Posted July 2, 2019 Share #16 Posted July 2, 2019 @JPizzzle At my age I can remember when things were built to last. Some things still are. Leica lenses are well built. There is no risk in buying a used lens. If you are risk-averse, do a risk assessment. How many faults can you expect in the next 20 years from a Leica lens and what would be the cost? Would that cost exceed the saving? My little brain would have worked that out and I'd now be haggling to buy the USD1400 cheaper lens on the basis that it could go wonky ... which I know it won't. If you get the chance and have the time, please look at the haggling scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian. It is an inspirational classic! It is on almost certainly on You Tube. If the glass is unmarked and pristine (and it sounds as if that's the case) I would buy the certified preowned lens in a heartbeat. JPizzzle Posted July 3, 2019 Author Share #18 Posted July 3, 2019 Spoke to the dealer-here’s the rub. The demo is a QM2 model, which does not come with the passport warranty, meaning that accidental damage is not covered for 4 years (credit card extends warranty an extra year). I thought they’d ended the accidental damage part. I’m sure insurance is cheaper in the long run.
