andamanaffair Posted July 29, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Up to now, I have always used screen protectors. Before I plaster one all over my shiny new DG3, would other forum users care to comment on the merits or otherwise of these devices? I am aware of the loss of clarity their use can incur and also of the dangers of sticky residues that some may leave but have, up to now, elected to trade the cons off against the pros. Does anybody recommend a particular brand that can be fitted to a Digilux 3 without incurring too many of the cons?
Advertisement Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Hi andamanaffair, Take a look here Screen Protectors for Digilux 3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
JBonner Posted July 29, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 29, 2007 I've never found any problems with screen-protectors, no residue or anything like that. The main problem is keeping the buggers on! They tend to curl at the edges and peel away after a while. As for lack of clarity, I only use the screen for brief reviews anyway so that isn't really an issue. I can't recommend any particular make, I just buy a pack now and again on ebay. The main reason I use them at all is because I wear glasses and they tend to bang against the screen. jdlaing Posted July 29, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 29, 2007 I use one from NavProtector. It is fairly hard and a perfect fit. It leaves no residue and is easily installed and a two pak is about 8 bucks. Navprotector - Finest screen protector in the market today
miami91 Posted July 29, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 29, 2007 Personally, I don't see the need. I'm fairly certain that Leica uses glass for the LCD screens, so they're pretty scratch resistant. The reason you need screen protectors for things like iPods, PSPs, Palms, etc. is that the screens are plastic. I've owned many Leica digicams the last few years, never covered the screens, and never had any problems. Jeff.
Smallcreep Posted July 30, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 30, 2007 On the basis of better safe than sorry, I bought a digiCOVER screen protector from Robert White, already cut to size for the D3 and so easier to apply. It's not the LCD's susceptibility to scratches that I'm worried about, as much as my own clumsiness.
andamanaffair Posted July 30, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted July 30, 2007 Thanks again to all those who have responded to my query. I can see the reasoning followed by the respondent who does not see the need for them on Leicas but, like Peter, I just feel uncomfortable with that pristine sheet of glass (or whatever) so near my glasses and snotty nose! I had actually ordered Digicovers before reading of Peter's similar purchase so I will go ahead and fit one when they arrive. Should I feel confident enough to remove it at some time then the blurb assures me that I can do so without detriment to what lies underneath. Once the Leica case arrives I can sally forth and use the camera! So far, I have restricted myself to the house and garden but am delighted with the DG3 so far. Although an obvious and ageing amateur myself, my late father was a 'pro'. As it was his livelihood, he looked after his equipment. I guess it rubbed off. I was brought up in a world of twin lens Rolleiflexes and Linhofs (I still have the former) and I often wonder what Dad would have made of the digital age. He would have been stunned by the results I have been achieving on the DG3, just prancing about in the garden.
