Dear Friends, I inherited 3 lovely R lenses from my Father, but am not sure what UV filters to buy as the phi sizes are not indicated and the filters are recessed. Please help.

Vario Elmar R 3.5/28-70

Summicron R 2/50

Elmarit R 2.8/135

these lenses have an amazing cinematic quality  and pinsharp focus. i am using them on a sony ar7II, for lack of capital to buy an M240 which would recognize them. Ms give better color rendition than the sony.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome Patrick,

Once I had the Vario-Elmar-R 28-70, nice lens "offered" as a kit with Leica R5 then (even made by Sygma),

this one in Wiki with no mention of the filter thread, if I recall well it's E60 a rare dimension.

Summicron-R 2/50mm I  is " Filter type - Series VI + 14160 " if first model (link to Wiki)

14160 is filter holder as Series filters have no thread on them.

or E55 if second model (as here in Wiki)

Elmarit-R 2.8/135 Series VII for first model

or E55 for second model ( link to Wiki )

As a current owner and user of the 28-70-R and 50/2-R  I can confirm that the filters are e60 and e55 respectively. The hood for the 28-70 mark.2 is an odd one as it does not screw into the e60 inner barrel but into the outer barrel and is Leica part number 12437. There is another e65mm Leica hood which fits but I don't think it is reversible like the 12437, which has an additional threaded sleeve on the inside of the hood. The mark.1 version of this lens has a built in hood. The Leica lens cap (74mm) for use with the foregoing hood is 14233. I found my one was slightly loose, maybe due to worn ribs on the inside or just age. It was nothing that a couple of strips of physiotherapists' zinc oxide joint strapping tape (the world's stickiest tape and very strong), stolen from my wife's clinic, could not sort out.

Even though the e60 filter size is somewhat uncommon in the wider camera world, it is a favourite size for Leica. I think I have 5 or 6 Leica lenses which use it, so have a range of e60 filters, UV, Skylight, KR12/85B warming, polarising, ND -4EV, yellow, orange, etc. The only filter I could not find at the time in e60, was a variable ND to use on my 0.95 Noctilux, so I use an e62 with an e60 to e62 step up ring. However even an expensive B+W Variable ND filter causes noticeable image degradation, so I tend to use either a polaroid -2EV or a fixed -4EV ND filter instead.

Wilson,

Over time, I have some E60 filters from Leitz / Leica to mount on my R and M lenses.

Some more informations.

Leica R lenses that need this E60 :

first version of Macro-Elmarit-R 2.8/60mm (11 203), Vario-Elmar-R 3.5/35-70 (some), 4/35-70 (11 277), 3.5-4.5/28-70 (11 364), 4/80-200 (11 281),

Apo-Macro-Elmarit-R 2.8/100 (11352), Apo-Telyt-R 3.4/180 (11 242, 11 358)

While M lenses use also this E60 thread :

Elmarit-M 2.8/21 (11 134) , Noctilux 1/50 (11 821, 11 822, but if 1.0 former first version to n° 2 919 656 filter E58), Summilux-M 1.4/75 (11 815)

For reference, I add here the "man. code" for Leitz E60 filter : UVa 13 381 , yellow-green 13 392, orange 13 383, pol. 13 406

Please feel free to add other "E60" informations.
