Frustrating to press the shutter and. . . nothing. A reminder that this isn't a mechanical camera. Turning it off then on again doesn't revive it. Removing then replacing the battery and then turning it on does the trick. This happened occasionally and now frequently, but I can't reproduce the fault on demand and I'm wondering whether to keep using the camera until it is more broken before sending in for service.

This happens from time to time on mine. Most recently, the film counter/battery level LCD was blank, the shutter refused to fire, but the Play feature worked fine.

Removing the battery does a colder boot than merely turning the camera on and off.

Other electronic devices sometimes behave the same way. Sometimes I have to reset my Mac by unplugging all cables, powering down, waiting 60 sec., and doing a hard reset with the power switch held down for 30 sec. or so. (Happens when it fails to recognize FireWire drives--well know problem.)

Anyway, I consider my M8 completely normal. For a computer, that is. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens often enough to be really inconvenient.

I have had a similar thing happen a couple of times. In my case the shutter button stops working, and the switch will not turn off the camera - ie, you can set it to off, but still bring up the menu and play. This was resolved by removing and replacing the battery. I don't imagine it's a camera specific problem as when I mentioned it, several others reported the same experience. I can recall it happening twice now, in 4 months of using the camera - so it's irritating, but rare enough that I can live with it.

This happened to mine--no counter, shutter not firing, rebooted by removing the battery, and the camera susequently [after about two successful shutter releases, quit working completely. Leica USA identified the problem as "faulty T2"--which they were either going to repair or replace, and subsequently agreed to replace the body [3100xxx]. I am expecting either a new camera to arrive 7/30 or confirmation that the original camera is off to Solms for its second visit since purchase.
