rbaron Posted July 27, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a previous firmware upgrade in the root (top) directory of an SD card. If I put a copy of the latest firmware upgrade into that same directory and put the card into my M8 and turn it on, will the camera offer me a choice of upgrades to install? Or will it be confused? Inquiring Minds Want To Know. Thanks, --Bob
Advertisement Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Hi rbaron, Take a look here Store Different FW Upgrades on One SD Card?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wparsonsgisnet Posted July 27, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 27, 2007 It's easy enuf to move the existing firmware to your computer and save it. I would not confuse the camera by having 2 versions on the same SD card.
andybarton Posted July 27, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 27, 2007 Sounds like a bad plan to me...
Hookeye Posted July 27, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 27, 2007 Bob, it seems as if you are about to enter uncharted territory. None of us have been there before. If you brave it - we woul'd all be interested in hearing about what happened!
wparsonsgisnet Posted July 27, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 27, 2007 Bob, While you've got the SD card attached to the computer, move the old upgrade out of the root into some other directory (don't make a new one! just use DCIM and move the old upgrade down a level in the directory tree). Then put the new one in the root. You'll probably be all right. You're using some old (and small) SD card that came free and has no other use, right? rbaron Posted July 27, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted July 27, 2007 Bill, you are close: it is a small SD card I bought and used to try out an M8 demo in February.....I didn't buy one until May. I keep a copy of the latest FW on it and have it stashed in my bag for the inevitable event away from home: the camera will stop working and I will need to try everything possible (drain battery, reinstall firmware, drop kick dealer) to get it restarted. So I started wondering about keeping *several* versions of the FW on the card......but I do not want to be the one to find out it doesn't work and irretrievably crashes the camera, thank you, so unless someone I can trust tells me they know it will work, I won't try it. ;-) --Bob

The M8 will have no idea they are there, as it only looks for them at the root of the SD card directory. You can trust me, really... I have done it myself. mustafasoleiman Posted July 27, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 27, 2007 If you want to be even more certain you can zip the old firmware upgrades into a new zipped archive. Not even an possessed M8 will know what to do with it.
wparsonsgisnet Posted July 27, 2007 Share #9 Posted July 27, 2007 After testing, of course, you'd need to unzip them if you entend to use them on the fly. Otherwise, the computer would have to ride next to the SD card and the reader.... We know from past posts about not being able to upgrade M8's that the camera only sees the firmware file if it's in the root of the directory tree on the SD card. wparsonsgisnet Posted July 27, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 27, 2007 Incidentally, there will be two kinds of people taking pictures this weekend. In another post, one user upgraded in advance of a shoot this weekend. I also have a shoot this weekend -- but no time to play beforehand -- and am NOT upgrading before the shoot. 'Course, he's a monster, so no problem. I'm merely the guy with the yellow streak up his back.

It is really not necessary to zip them if they are put in a folder as I said, but if you are not comfortable with that, zipping them will make them innocuous. gravastar Posted July 27, 2007 Share #12 Posted July 27, 2007 Of course some idiot had to try it - I can report the camera only sees the highest numbered version. I put several versions in the root directory and switched the camera on. Only the one choice of the highest numbered version appeared on the menu. I don't know if the camera erases everything on the card after the update or only the highest numbered version. I didn't continue with the update. As people said the safest thing is to keep earlier versions in a sub directory - although that might get erased unless you use the write protect switch on the card. Bob.
