Ok. I've installed the NEW and IMPROVED firmware and here are a couple of observations. Nothing scientific, mind you. Menus and playback do seem much crisper. Does the LCD seem a little sharper? Maybe. Shutter noise seems the same. I have not seen any blinders during playback yet.

Best of all - image noise seems WAY better. I have not shot much at 1600 or 2500 because of the noise, but now.... I'm looking forward to doing alot more low light work. I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Here are a few samples in order from ISO 160, 320, 640, 1250, 2500.

All processed in ACR default and converted to BW. Very minor levels in a couple.

Best,

Ron

When people ask me the same question about my software (not that it has bugs, you understand), I tell them there was a "code timing problem".

"I see", they'll say and go away happy and content but not much the wiser, thinking I have wrestled with some awsome technical challenge.

What I really mean of course is that their CD was cut before I'd fixed all the bugs...

Been said already, but ISO 1250 and 2500 seem much improved!!! Yay (especially 1250).... little or no banding.

The other thing I've noticed is better shoot through time (haven't measured, just my sense) when shooting in continuous mode.

Dare I say this??

From limited tests--and I'm stressing this--of about 100 continuous shots, apparently AWB is much improved as well! Shooting continuously, moving from daylight to tungsten, and the WB is pretty good! It's not a custom WB, but still, I'm impressed.

Of course, I still won't use it :) But it's nice to know anyway.

Finally, here are the 100% crops from ISO 2500. 1st in untouched, the 2nd has NR via photoshop.

Ron

Oh, maybe that when one re-writes code, there are not just known bugs fixed, but unknown as well. Bad code has more bugs than you can describe in a discrete list.

Besides, there have been new bugs installed usually. That is the list I am really intrested in.

I once read a QA report that went something like this.

Version 1.010 is much better than 1.009.

There is only one bug to report:

QA 104727: Version 1.010: Description: Program won't load

Well, I tried the second occurance of 1.107 and so far I see:

1. Time seems to be able to be set to the second

2. Play is MUCH faster

what else?

-bob

I've just loaded the version available from the web at 15:18 GMT and it does not allow me to set time to the second

Why are we having to guess at the changes?

It surely can't be too much of an effort to let us know.

What, and negate the placebo effect? :D

I'm shooting in very low light conditions, (band in recording studio) as we speak. After reading Jamie's and others report improved high iso, I took the plunge and risked it with my only digital body for this shoot. No problems, and iso 1240 and 2500 are much, much better.

What I want to see as soon as possible is for the shutter speed to show in the finder when manually adjusting speed. Must be doable, and it would make a significant difference in regular use. best....Peter

Hey,

I've downloaded and installed the new firmware and believe it or not:

  • My wife still loves me
  • My cat still mews
  • my business still depends on my being nice to my clients
  • my film needs developing to produce good pictures
  • my M8 is still a great camera
