elansprint72 Posted July 26, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) ..... folks from outside the UK will never understand the rules of this game. It is played by two teams, they each have two innings, during which the object is to get your opponents out. The field has a boundary and a wicket; on the wicket are six, erm, wickets , there are two leg sides and two off sides, depending upon which end the batsman and bowler are at. There is a batsman at each end . There are two umpires, or sometimes many more. Runs can be scored by running, or not running, when the ball is wide or even when it is over-thrown, or at the discretion of the umpire(s). Bowlers can have several, or more, styles of bowling- fast, slow, spin, devious, ambidextrous (these are the worst sort) or just plain useless. Anyway... I could go on for a couple of hours more and not even get into describing fielding positions, e.g. silly mid off, cover point, 3rd slip, gully..... In this photo we see the optional use of a seagull (always a wise choice), a river flowing across the "pitch" (this is a part of the field, grass is optional) an incoming tide (which can dictate a change of boundary, and/or location). Notice that I skillfully managed to capture the bowler, the batsman AND the ball. Just.

elansprint72 Posted July 27, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted July 27, 2007 Azzo, do they play cricket in Malta? Some years ago I was surprised to find a match going in in Corfu- locals, not tourists.
stuny Posted July 27, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 27, 2007 Pete - Very funny. Are you sure gull isn't an umpire? I find the games usually run a bit long, each threatening to use up my entire holiday.

kuddel Posted July 27, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, we have an Indian community here in Munich who plays regularly cricket in the 'English Garden' (a park).I watched them playing occasionally, but I have to admit that I never understood the game. Anyway, good picture and quite bizarre seeing the couple playing in that surrounding. Regrads, Andreas
Mountaineer-American Posted July 28, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 28, 2007 Dear Pete, You're right, many of us will never understand cricket, particularly us Yanks. I loved watching cricket when I was at Oxford & had absolutely no idea what was going on. I hereby invite you to cross the pond & visit the good old U. S. of A. We'll take you to a baseball game: the diamond, the mound, the dish, turn the double play, up the elevator shaft, the good cheese, in a pickle, came up for a cup of coffee, a can of corn, kill the ump, curveball, slider, bring the high heat, the bullpen's crap, doggin' it in the field, slugger, whiffed, 3 up & 3 down, went down looking, long relief man, a little chin music, shutout, knuckleball, change-up, hit for the cycle, 30-30 man, suicide steal, pitchout, backed him off the plate, he took it downtown. OK, I'll quit. Best wishes from the Land of the Free & the Home of the Brave. P.S. -- Your photograph is terrific.
elansprint72 Posted July 28, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted July 28, 2007 Folks, thanks for the comments on my light-hearted post. I heard on the radio this evening that the England vs India five day test match was interrupted due to "bad light"! Maybe they are all M-system users? :D:D:eek:
