Tragg Posted May 12, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 12, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Leica M-240 still appears too be available brand new. Why would anyone choose to buy this model over an M10? I've noticed that the M-240 is often discounted, so maybe the price makes it attractive?. Longer battery life perhaps? I'm NOT talking about those who already owned an M-240 when the M-10 was launched and decided to stick with this model.

a.noctilux Posted May 12, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 12, 2019 M240 available brand new, but do Leica really sell them ? When M10 was launched, 2017 january, I've ordered one and wanted to trade my then one year old M262, and/or M240 but the "trading value" was so small that I keep them, thinking to sell/trade later. If to buy new M, if need video, the M or M-P 240 family is the only one choice, now. The good news was the other side, I completed my M family with M246 second hand as new with discount I've never dream of.
Peter Kilmister Posted May 12, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 12, 2019 The M240 is a very good camera, in particular the M240-P version which was released a couple of years after the 240. The M246 Monochrom has yet to be superseded.

Wondering what my M10 might be worth by the time the next generation M camera model comes out. I was tempted to trade in for the M10-P but decided to put my money in Leica glass instead. I can see myself making a similar decision as you when the time comes to consider a new M camera. Seems "some" Leica glass ( not their digital cameras) might be the only true investments due to Leica's continuous price hikes. I recently purchased a new Leica Noctilux -M 50 f0,95. I wonder what this lens cost when it was first introduced? Edited May 12, 2019 by LBJ2

Noctilux-M 0.95 ... seen this in Wiki $US 9,995 in 2008 - 9,500 in 2010 - 11,350 silver in 2014

I sold my M240P and got an SL - loved the form factor of the M but the 240 had an awful red cast especially on skin tones, pain in the neck to fix in post. The SL is more neutral in color and I’ve heard the M10 is better in this regard too.
DBAUDUI1 Posted June 19, 2019 Share #7 Posted June 19, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I really still like the Leica M240. It gives perfect colours dynamic range and definition to me. The Leica M240 also has very nice video capabilities, which the Leica M10 does not offer! I hope any new M will also have very nice video capabilities on top of foto capabilities. I recorded some concert events, with the Leica M240 + Leica R to M adaptor and the Vario-Elmar 35-70mm F4 indoor on a tripod, with the dedicated stereo microphones. Really wonderfull. The only limitation is that you can not record more than about 9 minutes in one go. Also it would be nice to still allow to (re-) focus while filming. To take standard foto's, honestly the Leica M10 only offers 2 stops more. Quality of the pictures of the Leica M10 and M240 are similar between 100 ISO and 3500 ISO, which is far enough to me. We both have 24 Meg cameras. To me the only andvantage is for Leica, as you find now the same captor and processors in the Leica SL, M and Q (24 Mega pixel) cameras, which is a way to standardise their production. I was recently selected in a foto contest as one of the best fotographers, using the Leica M240... I could have selected the same way using a Leica M240... And today the Leica M240 is still a bargain compared to the Leica M10 so do nt hesitate to grab the Leica M240! Best regards. Dominique
DBAUDUI1 Posted June 19, 2019 Share #8 Posted June 19, 2019 Hello, Also never forget that Leica digital camera's will Always decrease in value, which is not the case of Leica lenses.... If you need to buy your first Leica M digital and want to buy the latest new camera, then buy the Leica M10-P . It has everything you need but video. The Leica M240 offers you the most value for the less money : foto, video (image and sound), horizontal scale, two colours of frames, better battery. The Leica M240-P offers you also the frame selector, more buffer and a special hard glass. To me the M240-P is still the Top. Then the M10-P offers a (little bit more) silent shutter and the horizontal scale, missing in the M10 is back. The viewfinder is a bit better in both Leica M10 (a bit more magnification and larger view for people using spectacles) than in the M240. Best regards. Dominique. Herr Barnack Posted June 20, 2019 Share #9 Posted June 20, 2019 (edited) The silent shutter mode and ISO availability up to 50,000 are where the M10 comes out ahead of the M240. That having been said, the M240 series cameras are still truly excellent cameras. I just wrapped up two exhibits of prints made using files from my M-P 240. Print sizes were 16x24 in. and 24x36 in. The prints looked fantastic and I have a very critical eye for the printed image. I knew that the 16x24 size would look great, but was a little concerned about going to 24x36 inch size. The M-P 240 vindicated itself in resounding fashion. Quote ...never forget that Leica digital camera's will Always decrease in value... True - but Leica's digital M cameras were never designed with the intention of being used as investment vehicles... 😉 Edited June 20, 2019 by Herr Barnack
