After many years in photography I broke down last week and bought the Leica.  Of course this created a great deal of curiosity in the family: I bought the Safari edition and silver 35 Summilux so there was no mistaking it for another Fuji.

My step son (16) normally uninterested  by most cameras and I had a long breakfast conversation about the various attributes of the Leica.  Of course this after seeing a couple of images from the camera.

My wife, also used to having nice cameras around was interested (she normally is).   This evening after a day of sailing  I shared a nice image (using the Leica app)  I caught of her on the boat.  After a few moments of observing the image she exclaimed “the Leica loves me!”  Of course it is I who loves her, but the camera  held up it’s end of the bargain.

I’m looking forwrd to learning and becoming used to the M10-P as my carry all the time camera.  This is also the first camera that the family has given a name.  It is now called the “the Leica” after a few days sailing.  As in “get the Leica there’s a whale over there.”  The name and nick name being the same is merely a coincidence.

Regards,

Kevin

I know what you mean. In Germany, our most popular tissue brand is ‘Tempo’ and over time it has become a generic term that refers to any paper tissue. When someone sneezes, people just go “Gesundheit. Do you need a Tempo?’ The funny thing is, it’s actullay Swedish owned. So, that would be like your family telling you “get the Hasselblad, there’s a whale over there.” 😂

You are lucky! My story is quite the opposite. My wife hates my M10 and has always lots of ideas about what else I should have bought for the money. My kids think I am a "Leica nerd" who always carry this camera, and the rest of my family has absolutely no understanding of how important photography is to me. 😁

Try to convince them by making great pictures, but never force them to pose. And maybe...sell the biggest lens....

Ernst already does, Paulus - just take a look in his gallery at the weblink in his signature.  I suspect Ernst's largest lens is his Noctilux with which he makes wonderful pictures so I hope he doesn't sell that.

But I don't know what the answer is either ...

Pete.

This is hard to understand and sounds rather sad to me. One day all of your family members will be very happy to have such wonderful memories with the pictures you make. I like your pictures very much and I sincerely hope, that one day your wife will say, that it was good not to buy anything else instead of the Leica ! Keep enjoying your passion !

My wife was the same; always complaining about me and my M6 (and, as of today, my M10!) So I let her have a play with it for a while (settle down, I'm talking about the M6) and she really loved it - it brought back memories of when she used to have an old film camera in the eighties. So I bought her one. Not an M6, an ancient Canon Sureshot off eBay. Expecting divorce papers in 3, 2, 1...
