Pecole Posted March 12, 2019 Share #1 Posted March 12, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) The orchid family counts tens of varieties. At this time of the year, here in South Portugal at least, many wild varieties are flowering everywhere. I discovered two in our garden this morning, small but nice. Welcome, dear visitor! Nick_S Posted March 19, 2019 Share #2 Posted March 19, 2019 I remember coming across the top variety (an orchis anthropophora hybrid?) in the northern part of Athens during the springtime a few years ago -- the homunculi are amazing to look at close up.
wattsy Posted March 19, 2019 Share #3 Posted March 19, 2019 I would have thought the first variety was more likely some kind of Orchis italica than O. anthropophora but, as you suggest, there are so many potential hybrids. 1
Nick_S Posted March 20, 2019 Share #4 Posted March 20, 2019 (edited) I think you may be right (I had been comparing the image with some online photographs of Orchis anthropophora x militaris). Looking more closely, what I saw in Greece was most likely Orchis italica. Edited March 20, 2019 by Nick_S
wattsy Posted March 20, 2019 Share #5 Posted March 20, 2019 The second one is presumably one of the many Ophrys species. Ophrys lutea perhaps (the Yellow Bee Orchid)?
