rodf Posted March 9, 2019 Share #1 Posted March 9, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) When using a macro adaptor with a 35mm sumicron or a 50mm summilux the focus peaking doesn't seem to work and the only way to focus accurately is to move the camera closer to or further from the subject. Am i missing something?

a.noctilux Posted March 9, 2019 Share #2 Posted March 9, 2019 Which aperture do you use ?
JDFlood Posted March 10, 2019 Share #3 Posted March 10, 2019 The macro is made specifically for the 90mm f4 lens. I think it works with others, not 28mm, but with some compromises.

Thanks for your interest, i have used a few different aperture settings f16, f4.5, f9 and f13 but all with the same problem, no focus peaking. Images are great but I suspect the only way to use it is with a tripod fitted with a tool to move the camera closer to or further from the subject using the live view in its unmagnified state, all very tedious. I see. Try with your lens wide open or close down one or two stops and moving a small bit in/out. In this case, the shallow dof may let you see the "blinking focus peaking" somewhere. I set the focus peaking to "green" in most case but "red" when I use for nature photos which is green in most time. If you can't see the focus peaking when trying this, maybe the setting or the function is out.
rodf Posted March 11, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted March 11, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for that advice a.noctilux, I tried that today with my summilux 50 wide open, but the problem seems to be that when I move the focus ring the live view does not go to the magnified view so therefore I don't see any focus peaking. With out the macro adaptor no problem. My guess there is something wrong with the mechanical linking of the lens to the camera via the macro adaptor. But is this a design fault? or something that can be easily fixed.
a.noctilux Posted March 11, 2019 Share #8 Posted March 11, 2019 (edited) So the problem here is the auto magnifier not shows up and no more focus peaking. That is normal behavior, the auto mag. is functional only with M lens direct mount which "moves" the link/cam/follow lever in the M body with the focus cam movement. With the adapter, the link sensing is not there, so no way for the M to know the focus is actuated or not. Just push the front button, and go on = that's what I do. rodf Posted March 11, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted March 11, 2019 Thanks again a.noctilux for your assistance, just tried the front button focus and it seems to work pretty well.
Simonedwards Posted March 19, 2019 Share #10 Posted March 19, 2019 Same thing happens with a 3rd party lens put on with an adapter.... you can only use the live view and it doesn't zoom or focus peak.... very annoying. I used to do a lot of macro shots with this canon lens strapped to my Sony a7II, but since upgrading to a full Leica M system, I don't use it anymore as it's just too hard to get good focus.
