I haven't been out shooting with a new 35 SL Summicron  for the past few weeks, and I won't see one for an unknown number of weeks to come, but I am curious to see how this line of Summicrons compares and differs with the treatment that we are used to with the M Summiluxes and the one recent 35 Summilux for the TL and CL APS-C coverage.  So here's a start and this thread can be a place to post such comparisons, preferably taken wide open.  Nervous versus confident bokeh, anyone?

To kick it off, fruits and vegetables, close, first with the 75 SC -SL on an SL @ f/2.0

And then, a bit closer, with the CL 35/1.4@1.4, taken with a CL:

Both shots OOC, no post processing, default settings in C One.

Two headshots taken by flash last night for a theatre production.

SL + Apo-Summicron-SL 90

ISO 100, f/4, 1/125

Processed in Lightroom to increase exposure by 0.8, to crop to 10x8 format, and set WB to flash. No sharpening, no noise reduction,

EDIT: I've just realised you were looking for comparisons with similar but non-Summicron-SL lenses; sorry, I don't have any suitable to hand at this moment.

more examples of both lines of lenses.  Do they constitute two distinct styles?

I have some nice headshots with R 80 Summilux on SL.  Will edit one in when I find it.

Hamming it up a bit, but the lens rendering is very Mandler SL with R 80 SX:

OK, Bokeh studies next.  Are these "nervous" or confident?  Each one has a foreground object at roughly the closest focus distance.

How do you like this SL APO 75 Summicron bokeh?

And this one, just for separating planes in the image:

Personally, they do not look as nice to me as the "best of the best" lenses I have used for bokeh, which would be the 110mm f/2 Planar on 6x6, the 75mm Summilux and 50mm 1.4 Summilux R E60, 100mm APO Macro R, 120mm APO Macro S and a few more esoteric lenses like the 180mm Tele-Xenar AF for Rollei 6008, and more or less any good plasmat for 4x5 or 8x10. That said, other than the last image, none of them strike me as particularly "nervous". These things are incredibly variable based on point of focus, aperture and background, so it is hard to generalize. I am sure they all have fine bokeh, but Leica tends to make their lenses very balanced with an emphasis on performance at the point of focus more than the OOF areas.

+1. Well observed and stated.

You are generalizing and I couldn't disagree more.

In the link, comparisons between the APO 75 Summicron-M and the APO 75 Summicron-SL. The OOF areas in these are smooth like a baby's bottom, particularly with the M lens. One has to look very hard to see a difference with the SL lens in OOF rendering: https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-nW5Qwt/i-M5rrZvw

I'll try to take some 'equally framed' test shots with the 75SL and the 90SL and see how each lens draws the OOF areas. 😀

Touché. I think what I was thinking is more that Leica seems to be more interested in the in creating high performance lenses, which inherently tend to have good/neutral bokeh. They do not make lenses with aberrations introduced to make the bokeh better, like the Nikon DC lenses or other makers who really want to emphasise bokeh. But I will stop generalizing now!

A series of similarly framed pictures with the 75 Summicron-SL and the 90 Summicron-SL. The 90 is a portrait lens and among the "best of the best" lenses, period.  😀
