Gid Posted February 23, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm trying to make sense of the auto Iso settings on the M240. I'm used to setting the max ISO and a minimum shutter speed - most other cameras I have used. However, what is the point of the maximum shutter speed setting? Apologies if I'm being stupid 😕 Thanks Gid

NigelG Posted February 23, 2019 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2019 Yes - confused me on first use. The setting is not maximum shutter speed but maximum exposure time which is a perhaps particularly “German” way of expressing the minimum shutter speed....... 🤔 They are equivalent. Set the maximum exposure time to say 1/30th second and the only available “exposure times” which are below that maximum are 1/60th second etc and up. I.e. faster shutter speeds.
Gid Posted February 23, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted February 23, 2019 @NigelG, thanks. Still makes my head hurt 😟
Jean-Michel Posted February 23, 2019 Share #4 Posted February 23, 2019 Hi, Exposure time is the correct term and concept. The shutter ‘speed’ is, as much as possible, constant and very quick: it simply means how quickly the shutter mechanism opens and, after staying open for the desired time, closes. How long the shutter is open is the exposure time. “Shutter speed” has been used as “exposure time” by just about all photographers, but it is important to know what is what. Gid Posted February 24, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted February 24, 2019 Hi @Jean-Michel, Thanks. I do understand - I've been photographing for a lot of years. It is using non standard terminology that threw me. Every other manufacturer that I have used lets one choose maximum ISO value and minimum shutter speed not maximum exposure time. The former has become akin to a control stereotype so seeing maximum where one expects to see minimum is the problem. It's not about being technically correct it's about common standard usability. Anyway, where is the max shutter speed in the menu are you referring to?

The two vaiables I expected to see were maximum iso and minimum shutter speed not maximum exposure time. When pointed out to me I realised my mistake. sblutter Posted March 19, 2019 Share #8 Posted March 19, 2019 The cure for that is to shoot all manual. Will take your engagement with the skill of photography to another level and deeper satisfaction with your work
