HI there!

I noticed some softening on the sides of some of my images. Not all of them but some. Sharp as a tack in the center

but in some images soft of the left and right sides about halfway between the corners. I always use F8 and set it so everything from

6 feet to infinity is in focus. The times when the middle sides are soft the areas fall into the 6ft to infinity.

Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated.

Grateful,

Dennis

Can you upload a problem image?

According to the Leica data sheet (from their website), at f/8 the lens would need to be focused at about 5m to give a depth of field range from 1.934m  (slightly over 6ft) to infinity, so your image should be acceptably sharp at normal viewing distances and magnification.

You may have a look at the MTF-graph for the lens which illustrates the resolution differences in the field of view: http://de.leica-camera.com/content/download/101882/874581/version/6/file/Datenblatt_Elmarit-M+2.8_28mm_e+(2).pdf

As one would expect there is a considerable drop of resolution in the extreme sides. Though - when do you really need perfect sharpness at the exteme edges of your photos?

Showing an example might be helpful though.

What version of the ASPH?  I recall someone saying the previous version is sharper in the corners than the newest.

...and less so in the center compared with the new one. Seems strangely optimized for the SL rather than the M

Thank you for the replies. I will try to post some images. I just had the sensor cleaned at Leica NJ this past month. I compared

images prior to sensor cleaning and they do not suffer from this ailment. When I received the camera back from Leica NJ the

paperwork stated that they calibrated the sensor. I wonder if that is the issue.

My apature ring has come completely loose it spins and only adjusts the apature if you put pressure on it. Just over a year old now. I have not used it much but I’m on vacation and is getting used. To get by I set it at f8 and leave it.

Anyone else have this issue?

If you bought your Elmarit 28 new, it is still under warranty.  When vacation is over and you return home, don't forget to contact Leica or your Leica dealer about getting warranty service on your lens.

Depends upon magnification or enlargement. If you focus at 4 meters (13 feet), everything will look in focus from about 2 meters (6 feet) to infinity at average magnifications DoF tables are calculated for. For larger magnifications or enlargements, you must choose f/11, f/16 or f/22 to get the same DoF.  Then at f/8 and 4 meters focus distance, some parts of the picture will look softer at infinity if you watch them on screen at 100% magnification, especially at edges and corners.
