Who said anything about investment, and why would they not be used?

Much like your spate of camera leather recovering, some people like the look of their equipment.  I like the silver chrome on brass lenses (the silvered aluminium, not so much) - they’re used ...

...I've ordered APO50BC to replace my current normal APO50.

My gripe on current APO50 is the size / feel of the focusing ring, the old design is much easier to focus. Also I like the look and that the investment on the lens stays better than on normal APO50.

Well, special leather from Cameraleather is 100$ max. A special edition lens is a bit more, making it  a collector's item, not a user lens. Although I personally would be daft enough to use it... :(

In fairness you do have the skills to put the leather on yourself, which aids economy... 😉

I have had many collector's item lenses and only ever used them...

You get a very good lens for your money and something a little unusual.

I like the Chrome 28 just because I prefer chrome lenses on chrome cameras but would be tempted by the 5,6 just to see what I could do with it...😋

I'm meh on special editions when they offer nothing over the standard one other than a finish change.  The only one that might interest me would be the 50 APO, as a prefer the knurled focus ring to the more classical tab, which is why I paid the extra money for the 50mm Summilux BC.

According to Steve Huff, the Leica's Limited Editions deliver the best quality possible within the Leica Camera AG criteria.

There may be sample variations but this can only be known after the lens is built. I don't know why 'special editions' would be different, as I am sure they do not bin or remake "C" lenses .We know some lenses are more difficult to assemble and what this suggests. For most special editions we are paying for cosmetics, not a superior optical cell.

Win/win Robert. 5.6 vailable in chrome on brass and cheaper. A super little, stress little, lens.

I can hardly trust his words.

I have asked Leica US about the binning of the quality. I asked because there were hearsay that the price difference in different area was the result of different quality, that the USA price is much higher than Asia because USA got the best grade.

Leica Office in New Jersey told me it’s nonsense. Leica has absolutely only one grade worldwide, he had no comment on the price difference, but if the item can be registered on Leica official site, it should be the same best Leica can offer.

I would not doubt there were quality difference across samples, but it will be beyond the Leica quality control to tell. It should be impossible for normal mortal to tell.
