I just found back old negatives of the very first pieces of my Fontenelle collection (if one excepts the Leica IIIc and M3 I had already used for years), that I proudly photographed with my M3/Summicron 50 in the garden of my first house, Fontenelle (yes, that's the origin of my Leitz-Leica collection's name), about 20 miles South of Brussels. And I add an image of the house, to be complete.

Pierre, thanks for showing these pictures! When was it that you began to collect Leica material?

Lex

Thanks for your interest, Lex. I started in 1975, after I bought James Lager's first book and when I was 36 and could afford costs. But my interest dates at least ten years earlier and I started using a Leica IIIc at the age of 16.

Veriendelijke groeten

Pierre

I have always admired you collection (including your photography of it) and I have a few questions related to it. Here are my questions:

What was the inspiration that lead you to collect Leica Cameras and related items? I ask this because you were one of the early collectors of Leica gear.

Related to the above, why did you decide to sell your tremendous collection? I realize that you may not wish to answer these questions but if you feel comfortable they are questions that I have wished to know and I am sure there are others who wonder the same things.

Related to this, you have been an inspiration to all of us. You had a fantastic collection and your photography of it has been a special resource that you have kindly shared with all of us on the forum. I wish to thank you for this sharing.

I totally agree with these questions.

Hi, George (I hope you authorize me using your first name, since I get the impression of knowing you for so long..),

first of all, many thanks for your appreciation. Yes, I realize now I was among the first Leica collectors : Rolf Fricke already told me that when he visited my collection in the early eighties, and it is thanks to that fact that I was happy to build  valuable friendships with people like him, James Lager, Ghester Sartorius, and so many others, dealers included. What leaded me to collect? I had quite an incredible life with many passions in it. Aviation was first : I started flying very early, made my military service at the Belgian Air Force where I finished as a captain, became an Aviation journalist next to my studies (I am Doctor at Law) and as such was given a Leica IIIc with Summitar to cover various events. I loved this gear, and later upgraded to M3 with Summicron 50, 35 and 90...but kept the IIIc in a drawer. When I became advisor to Boeing and Singapore Airways, I was not only elected "Man of the Year" by the Belgian Association of Aviation Journalists, but got enough money to buy more Leica stuff. Then came 1975, the 50th anniversary and the first Lager book, and that´s the real begin of the systematic collection.

Now, why did I decide selling it? My life - I would say "our" life because my wife Colette shares it for 57 years - has been marked by fast and radical decisions and changes. In 1993, at the age of 59, I received a letter from the social services advising me that I was allowed to work until 65 (the normal age of pension then), but following various bonifications linked to my studies and Air Force, I had reached the maximum possible in payment, and was authorized to retire and benefit immediately. Our three children were on their own and we had since the mid-seventies (that's another story) a big and incredible property in South Portugal. The decision took 24 hours : we will live an other life there, sell all our belongs in Belgium - house, Aviation library (my other "collectionite"), Leica collection - and aim for sun and rest. That's all. But I kept a few reference books, and I still start every day opening my computer on "Leica Forum" and "Aerobuzz", a daily Aviation newsletter. And putting my Leica archives in order…

Enough?

Leically yours.

Pierre

Thank you for translating George's remarks and questions for Spanish speaking fellows, Dopaco...and geographical neighbour. I hope my text above will satisfy you either.
