I thought it created the 'new' supplementary dng with more pixels to 'enhance'. I would hope that LR is never destructive of the original file.

No, it doesn't delete the original file.

There are apparantly some  bugs which seem to specific to certain hardware which are being investigated. So if you get some weird colours or artefacts.....
