Just had a quick search on e bay, there are several hundred 34mm filters to choose from.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I don't know what search parameters you use to find "several hundred 34mm filters" on Ebay. I find very very few 34mm screw-in filters with any search I find, either on Ebay or elsewhere. And most of them are slip-over types that won't work with the modern Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 lens.

I am not looking for UV or "protection" filters. I'm looking for B&W filters ... Green and Orange, Yellow, Red, etc. It seems most from B+W and Heliopan are discontinued or in very, very short supply anywhere. The old Leica brand filters in this size are very difficult to find too.

I did find a Heliopan 34->39mm adapter ring, and that works without vignetting for my E39 filters ... but not with any hood I've got or can find. Thorsten Overgaard makes a lens hood for the Summaron 28 that includes a 39mm filter mount, but at the princely sum of US$250.00, and not rectangular but round (much less efficient). And I found one UK based supplier that sells 34mm filters in a house brand... that's it.

While I'll probably use the 28 Summaron without a filter a good bit of the time, I like to have this option for B&W photography. It's a general PITA that Leica designed the lens such that all the old Leica slip on attachments for 36mm OD do not work, 39mm filters common on many other lenses don't work, and even themselves do not sell new filters in E34 sizing.

Two events yesterday:

- I fitted the Heliopan 34->38mm filter adapter and my Leica X1 Green filter to the Summaron 28, went for a good long walk with it. As usual, a green filter really does the number on the M10 Monochrom ... most exposures, other than for minor cropping and straightening due to my sloppiness in holding the camera level, require no other rendering work at all. Very pleasing.

- The ancient Leitz FBX00 (green) and FIOOC (deep yellow) E34 filters I found at a dealer in Austria (for a princely sum) arrived. They fit the Summaron-M 28mm perfectly, inside the standard lens hood. Very pleasing.

Still waiting on the SRB filters I ordered from the UK, and the 85c (salmon-orange) filter I ordered from NY to arrive, but I think I have this filter problem solved.

You could just carry your largest size orange filter with you and hold it over the end of the lens when you want to use it. As I now do.

That's just so clumsy I can't get into it ... never mind all the possibilities of flare and reflections that such a methodology might incur. I want screw in or clamp on filters and hoods that work, not jury-rigged stuff that is easy to drop and can easily cause other problems.

Since this thread is from February 2019 - I wonder if OP has bought the filter yet or he is still pondering incoming opinions.

I wanted to help anyone searching for a protection for this wonderful lens.

Maybe it’s not so easy to find a 34mm filter.

Rodenstock filters are a good choice overall.
