Does anyone know whether a modern version of the Leica ABLON film leader trimming guide is available - preferably in metal rather than plastic?  Yes I know you can cut the film without one of these but I'd like to try one  - without spending the money required to purchase a collectable item. Thanks

Back in the 1950s other companies made similar film leader trimming templates, and I’ve seen them now and then on eBay for much less than the ABLON.

If you use a daylight bulk loader, they all require you to pull more film out of the cassette to clear the back end of the ABLON which is shaped for cutting the film end that fits the FILCA spool, so unless you do this in the dark you expose more film than necessary. That’s why I stopped using the ABLON and just free-hand with small scissors.

And here are images of ABLON and other film-cutting devices I had in my collection., including ABCOO and its leather pouch.

I use a San Giorgio template - picked it up while in Milan in 2016 - much cheaper than the current Ablon prices

Not an ABLON but the much rarer ANZOO for the Reporter 250 camera. My son has already 3D printed the plastic prototype from photographs and drawings I had provided. He had made the sprocket locating nubs moveable in slots, to get the correct film alignment, so that the trimming cut does not transect a sprocket hole. Now that the prototype is finalised, production of the stainless steel definitive version is under way, using a CNC controlled plasma cutter and maybe 3D printed metal hinges. It helps that my son is a 3D printer development engineer, mainly working on 3D metal printers, costing £0.5 million upwards. Given that the last ANZOO sold for around $3,000, I was never going to buy one. A cutting template is actually far more essential for the 250 reporter than the ABLON is for a Barnack, although I do use my original ABLON.

PS There is a San Giorgio copy for sale on Fleabay at the moment

bloody expensive IMHO - US$220 (up there with the ABLONS) for just the template. I paid just over 50 euros for both template & cutter (brand new when I purchased)

These trimmers were for bulk film and loading reusable cassettes. All 35mm film up to around the late 70’s had longer Leica friendly leaders.

If you’re using pre loaded film then they’ve already cut some of the leader for you. Just use scissors to cut it a bit longer.

You can buy small pairs of scissors from £1 upwards.

Here is one that I made, sure looks a bit rough but works like a charm.
