M8 lost RF coupling. What to do?

Recommended Posts

Today my M8 lost rangefinder coupling with Summarit-M 35/2.5. Double image is visible, but it won't move when turning the lens focusing ring. Frame lines are visible.

First I checked  RF window, it was clean and not blocked. Then I removed the lens and checked RF coupling arm. The arm is sticky, I can move it by finger, but it's not coming back to home position.

What to do? Should I send my camera to Leica service?

Sounds as though either the return spring has been displaced or broken or something has moved and is fouling the RF coupling arm - which you probably realise. Question is whether anyone other than Leica can repair this? On an M8 I'd suggest sending it to Leica - it should be a straightforward repair and so not too costly but others might be able to tell you how much needs to be removed to get at the arm and can advise better on this. Personally I'd send it to Leica and see what they say - the only snag being that they may find other things which they recommend dealing with at the same time and thereby increase the cost.

You could consult a third-party repair shop, as this is a mechanical problem and not digital-M specific. It does not sound too dramatic.

Very interesting videos. I am tempted to take top off my M8 just out of curiosity. Do not see it is necessary for rangefinder adjustment though. I thought all you needed was to take off the Leica logo?

My M8 rangefinder also got stuck temporarily. Then it fixed it self.

Nordvik, I didn't remove the Leica logo, I only removed top cover and put a drop of Super Lube to one spot where RF got stuck.
