I have been shooting for more than 40 years and I have used Leica back in the days of film. I like the lenses and camera back then but eventually went on to Hasselblad 500CM and then DSLR from Nikon and Canon.  I have to say I do see a Big difference when I shoot Med Format Digital. I don't know about Leica Look. I know the leica lenses were made in Germany years ago and Now they are made other places. So, I am not sure about the Look but I will say the new leica are Excellent . I feel that the lenses are OVER Priced and side by side with another high quality lens there is very little to NO difference in IQ. If the prices were more competitive I feel more photograhers would use Leica Glass. Now this is just my .02    I have been using Fuji GFX lenses and they are Excellent.

    Thank you  Dennis

Since this was posted in the SL section: I don't have a basis of comparison with either Hasselblad or Fuji, what follows may not be relevant to the original post. But, the three SL zoom lenses are, in my experience, quite distinctive and well worth the price. With the exception of the 50 Summilux, I haven't purchased any SL primes. If I need a fast prime, I can use M lenses. But the biggest reason I don't hanker to get the SL primes, as good as everyone reports them to be, is the three zoom lenses are tack sharp and have soul.

If only they didn’t require a ‘soul train’ for transport. :(

Umm.. Leica M, S and C lenses are made in Wetzlar, SL lenses (i think) as well. BTW, many of the best lenses in the past were made in Canada.

I thought the TL/CL lenses were made by a third party in Asia? Pretty sure the SL lenses are as well but maybe 'calibrated' in Wetzlar or something to allow the Made in Germany label.

The T/CL 35 and 60 are marked "Made in Germany" and I thought the 23 was also, but it may be that it got Leica more involved in the design only.

I recall in early 2000 getting porcelain industrial products which were sold as "Made in UK" while being 100% manufactured in China.  Only UK added value was final inspection and providing shipping paperwork for export to a third country.

Made in Germany and Leica is probably pushing the legality of such statement to the limit, we keep forgetting that Portugal facility plays major part in fabrication of cameras, lenses and other products like binoculars, accessories, etc.

Some of the TL lenses are "Made in Japan." What of it? We've had Leica lenses made in Japan since the 1970s, and Leica lenses made by subcontractors like Angenieux, Novoflex, Schneider, Zeiss, since the 1950s (or earlier?). I'm sure it's fascinating to trivia buffs, but all that matters to photographers is performance.

What of it? Nothing at all, just pointing it out for accuracy.

Leica had a factory in Midland, Ontario from about 1952-1990.It produced primarily M series cameras and lenses. Sometimes the lens or camera said "Made in Canada" sometimes not. All products from this lab were highly-regarded. When Leica was struggling in the 1990's the factory was sold to an American company that produces optical lab equipment for scientific purposes. (The name of that company escapes me.) I believe it is still operating.

The factory was acquired by Hughes. Now it’s owned by Raytheon.

That Hughes military lens would go well with the SL...or the S1R. 😁
