After the "Elmax", comes the normal Leica I with fixed Elmar lens. Here also, there are variations in the items in my collection. "Mushroom" (nº 6912), "Dimple" (nº 8419) and threaded releases are the first. But there is also the "close-up Elmar" like on nº 21063 (which has a threaded release), high (nº 42805) or low (nº 24232) winding knobs.

The camera on the left, shown above, has a dimpled mushroom shutter button, but a higher wind knob. According to the von Einem book the height of knob was 6mm and then 6.5 mm for the first variant (SN 1170 to 2400). I have two from that group and I must check if they are 6 or 6.5 mm. Also according to von Einem, the height was increased from 6.5mm to 8.5 mm (by 2mm- which is about the difference shown here) from the 7th variant starting from SN 31600, but I believe that I have seen earlier cameras with the higher wind knob. However, any dimpled mushroom cameras I have seen have the lower knob, but the one on the left above may have been replaced. As with most early Leica items there was a lot of overlap and replacement going on at that time.
