I heard it was sea ice in the fjords to the west of me. Unfortunately it had already starting to break up. This is Nordvik where I got my family name. Nord = North and Vik = small bay (in a fjord)

It is not really that cold now. -5 at night and around 0 at daytime. But it has been -15 for weeks  earlier. The lowest temperature was -16,9.

In january 2010 there was a cold weather. This is my personal record. I found the picture of the E30 from february 2010.

No, I do not. I have been thinking about an electrical heater for the engine block lately (used of course). The ideal solution would have been a Webasto, but it is extremely expensive new, and too much trouble with a used one.

My M-B W201 have gone 382000 km and it is 30 years, so it is too late to start saving the engine from cold starts. To get a diesel car started in cold wetter you only need a good battery and a fresh diesel filter (and winter diesel, but that is never a problem if you tank it up from the late autumn).

(The picture is from last march, the month we usually get the most snow. Taken with Jupiter 8, I think)

While stationed in North Dakota with the Air Force I found it necessary to use a tank heater - A heater/pump powered from the electrical mains which one connects between the radiator and the engine block to pump electrically heated coolant around the engine block overnight so the car can start in the morning.  One of my colleagues used to disconnect his car battery every night and bring it into his home to keep it warm, and it would start his car in the morning.  We had electrical outlets in the parking lot where I worked in the Air Force, and downtown, some 24 KM away, there were electrical outlets for street parking and at parking lots.  At the time it was not unusual to see cars left running as people did errands, but it was rare for anybody to steal a car since cars were necessary for survival.  it was also illegal to pass a stranded motorist in the winter without offering help.

I still leave the car running here in rural Norway when I go to the grocery shop. We trust people here, but when we travel to the city...

In the early nineties I parked my /8 diesel outside of the university of Trondheim with the engine running (it was freezing cold). Since this was a big city by norwegian standards I locked the car with an extra key. Some professor noticed this and told me how I was destroying the environment. I ignored him, but he followed me for hundreds of meters arguing. He was very angry at me.

(The pictures show the white /8 that I was talking about. It was a 200 1969-model. Some time someone had transplanted a 220D engine from a Hanomag into it. Here I am transfering that engine into a yellow 1974 240D that for som reason had a 280 engine (I needed that engine for another project). I miss those cars)
