Is the S1/S1R a good backup camera for SL

Another great lens for L-mount, the Sigma 1.8/135mm. Phantastic IQ. And cheap/affordable (but heavy.)   Now available.

Adapted the lens was already great optically, but now in native L-mount it is a pleasure to use. (With AFs and AFc)

Gerald Undone with an interesting comparison between S1 and S1H from a video perspective.

He has also compared the S1 to the Sony for video, also very interesting, but older, so not on the latest firmware.

The Lumix S-Pro 24-70 f 2.8 seems to be close to the SL 24-90 in quality.  Maybe AF is even faster and quite well for video. And the shade is much nicer (not as terrible as the rectangular shade of the SL 24-90 that does not fit the lens and the camera). And it is also a lot lower in price.

An interesting new lens for L-mount. Very cheap, really an entry zoom for everyday use. They write it is a S lens, so seems to be for full frame. Cheap and light, would really like to try it. It comes at the end of July. No match for the Leica zooms, but probably good enough for the casual user.

That is really interesting range! Wish they would have made it a PRO lens, I don’t mind that it is slow.

New firmware for the S1/R cameras. They say with AF improvements.  https://www.photographyblog.com/news/panasonic_lumix_s1_s1h_and_s1r_firmware_updates

Will this AF update also come for the SL2 ? Or even the SL ?   And when ?

I wonder if it’s possible to improve the AF on the CL too. Panasonic (and Fuji ) bring improvements with every firmware issue.

Many new lenses from Sigma will come soon, 12mm, 2x 14mm, maybe a 2/200mm and a new 2.8/300mm.

https://www.l-rumors.com/panasonic-will-release-the-new-85mm-f-1-8-s-lens-on-november-5th/

And Panasonic finally brings some primes. Here Mr. Wong with the first one, the 1.8/85mm. Nice and small, finally. I hope the 50mm and 24mm will also come soon.  They should be about the same size, so the lenses that some users have been expecting since many years. Too bad Leica missed this chance to offer such small and affordable everyday lenses. (Such a small 50mm is really needed, hopefully optically good enough to replace my Summicron R 50 ).

Returning to the original topic I’d be interested in hearing any experience of any one using the S1R alongside the SL2. I’m using my SL 2 more and more and could imagine using it on assignment as my main system. However I’d then need a second body as a partner / backup. I suppose I could use a used SL1 and be able to share battery etc. That way the zooms which have IS would still be useable, but I’d still miss IBIS with the primes. However as you can get clean used S1R for around £1800 it looks like better value than used a SL1 at around the same price.
has anyone worked with both? In many contexts I could imagine pairing the zooms or having 35 prime on one body and 75 on the other.

I use the SL and S1H.  The SL2-S was not available when I got the S1H to get IBIS and more video functionality.  The articulated screen is useful .  Sharing L mount lenses between the cameras is a dream.  It would be optimal if the cameras were fully identical in UI like an S1 and S1R pairing or an SL2 and SL2-S pairing.  The SL has the older 4 button interface.  I can use my S1H and SL on the assignment.  I have them customized over time to best suit my style of shooting.

The real issue I face is Panasonic and Leica have different flash protocols.  This makes TTL and HSS functionality expensive as you have to buy two separate systems.

Adding the SL24-90 to the S1H makes for sensational images and video.  I prefer the looks and UI of the SL.  The S1H is true hybrid still/cine machine.  FWIW, the S1H is a great backup to my SL and a video A cam to my SL B cam.

Thanks. That’s helpful. I’ve had years of running M alongside Canon 5 Series cameras. What you’re saying here makes sense to me. 🙂
