Is the S1/S1R a good backup camera for SL

With the S1H Pana has also announced the 2.8/24-70.    https://leicarumors.com/2019/08/27/l-mount-alliance-panasonic-announced-a-new-s1h-camera-and-24-70mm-f-2-8-lens-both-for-l-mount.aspx/ https://www.dpreview.com/news/8772897579/panasonic-lumix-s-pro-24-70mm-f2-8-to-ship-in-october-for-2200  https://news.panasonic.co.uk/panasonic-launches-new-lumix-s1h-with-cinema-quality-video-and-worlds-first-6k24p-321-recording-capability/

The new lens could be an interesting alternative for the SL 24-90 . It is a bit lighter, shorter, and so probably handy as a always on lens. It is expensive (2200$ in US) but very cheap compared to the Leica. It will be very interesting to see IQ at wide open aperture. And it is a Pro (Leica certified) lens unlike the 24-105.      https://news.panasonic.co.uk/panasonic-launches-new-l-mount-interchangeable-lens-for-its-lumix-s-series-full-frame-mirrorless-cameras/

In the future the question is slightly different: Is the S1R a good backup camera for the new SL2 ? Or a replacement ? Or not comparable at all, though the specs could be very close to each other ...  Here some first “serious” rumors.  https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/news/leica-sl2-specs-leaked-and-its-a-47-megapixel-monolith

Looking at the prices and the sophistication of the software, the question poses itself for me, if these video features are not quite useless, and a user is served well better with a new iPhone 11 Pro with 3 lenses and software that looks much more advanced. Is this really the case, or just marketing gimmicks ? The new phones look very attractive for video ...

I am no video user, so I wonder what videographers think about this ...

The answer is exactly the same as for stills. Just replace the appropriate words in the text below:

A smartphone will satisfy most stills shooters, the same way that a box camera did 90 years ago. You will even find some serious/artistic photographers who use it extensively. This is done as a personal challenge, and also because the smartphone/box camera has a distinct "look" that is very familiar to contemporary viewers.

In the end, most serious photographers want more flexibility to express their vision. As an analogy, Shakespeare did not just write sonnets. He also ventured into less restricted forms.

Whose end? Most phone photographers just want to press a button and let the camera do the rest. Oh, a few cool automated effects with another button, too.

There are many serious Smart Phone photographers who routinely post on social media whose work is incredible. Yes... many use there phone just for snaps... but a lot don't.

I will very like keep my SL. But I would like to have a backup body, just in case. Would the S1 or S1R fit that gap ?

While the lenses are compatible, other accessories such as charger, batteries and flash are not. So it’s not an ideal backup.

A word about “unbiased” photo reviewers that are “telling the truth” as the Northrups entitle their shows.

When the Lumix S cameras were announced, without testing them, they found the high-res feature (resulting in 180 MP pictures) purely a marketing gimmick and unusable. They never changed their mind and corrected themselves. But now with the new Sony camera that has now also an equivalent feature, what surprise ...  they find it great.   This is really what I call the unbiased truth ....      admirable !

I thought that they still found the Sony version unusable, and we’re basing theiprior assessment of the Panasonic on Sony or Olympus technology.

Mode 2 works well enough for me on landscapes, but I wouldn’t use it normally other than when I need all the res I can get.

Most of their 'reviews' seem to involve 12hrs of messing about  under limited conditions ...... and they very rarely go back and re-visit their initial opinions.... except where the manufacturers have corrected the problems 'they' found and they want to crow about it.

At least Jared Polin ...... for all the big hair and hype spent a good while with the camera in real-world situations and produced a pretty fair assessment of the pros and cons.

The new 2.8/24-70 zoom, as good as the Leica lens and better than the 24-105 ?  https://www.thephoblographer.com/2019/08/28/first-impressions-panasonic-lumix-s-pro-24-70mm-f2-8-super-sharp/

A short video taken with that lens (text is German, not crucial for video). Quality looks excellent. https://www.lbag.ch/panasonic-lumix-s-24-70mm-f2-8.html

Wongs review of this lens.  https://www.l-rumors.com/panasonic-lumix-s-24-70-f-2-8-hands-on-review/

Pixel peeping to the extreme. The Panasonic 50mm vs the rest of the glorious 50 mm. Test with S1R. Here the second round (actually a bit boring) after the first test several months ago. The text is in German, but no loss if you ignore the spoken word (speaker is quite boring and makes you sleepy).

What follows the S1R ? Here rumors about several new cameras. The image of the SL2 looks real, but is maybe just fake. It looks as if it has features very close to the S1R ....   Or is it all just an invention ?   Is LENR the only real difference in the end ?

In the new SL2 (announced since a few minutes  https://en.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-SL/Leica-SL2 ) the M lenses are officially supported. This a valuable add-on compared to the S1R. (One of the few weaknesses of S1/R)      I wonder how it is with the MC-21 adapter. Will it be supported on the SL2 ? (Or only on S1/R and fp)
