Hi guys, I have some questions on focus points:

1. In "single point" mode, I always get 169 points (a 13x13 grid covering the whole viewfinder). Changing the number of focus points (or "steps" as Leica calls them), doesn't make any difference - is that expected/correct?

2. In "field" mode, changing the number of steps does change the number of selectable focus points as I expect - my question is, what is the advantage of using a lower number of points, e.g. 1 or 5? Doesn't it make sense to always use the maximum (49), for flexibility? Perhaps focusing speed is faster with fewer active points?

3. Field mode feels less accurate than single point, simply because the focus point is larger (a square rather than a '+'); is that a correct perception, or is there no difference?

Thanks,
Andy

Sorry I can't answer your specific questions but I can tell you that I have always used the SL in Single Point mode and been extremely satisfied with the focusing. I think Single Point gives you greater accuracy, like focusing on the eye when taking a portrait.

Cheers, Tom

Yes I've always used single point as well, and have been happy with it too. It doesn't hurt to experiment/try to learn if there might be something better though of course, perhaps in certain shooting scenarios only.
