I wouldn't dare walk into a bank like that, but that's a moot point. It's so cold they're all closed today. We took with us a postcard of the Madison skyline at around 20 below: the smoke from the chimneys was like a thick cloud falling to earth. The rule there was 20-20-20: at twenty below, and 20 mph wind, you had 20 minutes before suffering severe frostbite. I'm guessing from the homes behind you in the selfie, that it was either the near East Side, or south of Park St. Edited January 30, 2019 by bags27

You're correct that this was taken on the east side, just across from Orton Park. I have friends who spend the winter in Palm Springs and since I live just a few blocks away I check on their house for them. I live further east, just across the Yahara River where it flows into Lake Monona. Did your postcard look anything like this? It's a photo I took for my Madison book and it's also at 20 below zero? This is Lake Mendota and I shot it from Tenney Park. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! fotografr Posted February 2, 2019 Author Share #10 Posted February 2, 2019 Two wise men, indeed. I probably wouldn't have pulled out my ski goggles but I heard a news report that said temperatures like we had can very quickly freeze the cornea. For a photographer, that would not be good. albert Posted February 2, 2019 Share #11 Posted February 2, 2019 Earlier that morning I walked into a North wind @ -58 windchill, -29 actual. I walked 40 meters without facial protection. I immediately threw my gloved hands over my face and stumbled back to my warm car. I have never felt a more intense stinging. My old hero Senator George McGovern srpote a book titled “Terry”. She was his daughter who had a lengthy history of various addictions. She was found at age 45 frozen as solid as block of ice in an alley behind a bar in Madison, Wisconsin. Be careful. PS: my 43 year old daughter has been MIA for 18 months. My other three children and grandchildren keep me going. Forgive the ramble.

I sincerely hope your daughter pulls herself together, but realistically I know the odds are not good. I truly cannot imagine how you cope with this. My younger sister committed suicide in 1989 and my father never recovered from it. There was a sadness in him until he died in 2008.

In extreme heat it would evaporate, as opposed to vaporizing. Regardless, it's too damn cold! Spring, summer and fall are fine with me.
