I wanted to get back into developing film while sticking to a budget..... and love it. Will probably have questions for forum members as I learn to use it. Advertisement Posted January 27, 2019 Posted January 27, 2019 Hi Freightdawg747, Take a look here Love the "Ugly Duckling" M5. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TomB_tx Posted January 27, 2019 Share #2 Posted January 27, 2019 Good choice! I passed on the M5 when it came out, staying with my M4 until the M6 came out. But I also found a right-priced M5 a few years ago, and after a service by DAG it has been a terrific camera. I love the spot meter.
ktmrider2 Posted January 28, 2019 Share #3 Posted January 28, 2019 Purchased one from Sherry about 2.5 years ago and all I can wonder is why I waited so damm long. I love the M2 and M4 but the M5 is probably the best shooter. I still have to hold debates with myself as to wither I take the M5 or MP240.

colint544 Posted January 28, 2019 Share #5 Posted January 28, 2019 (edited) M5 is my favourite of all the M's. It's a proper machine for making pictures with. Ergonomics are superb, and it's extremely intuitive in use. The overhanging shutter speed dial is sublime. The oversized rewind crank is cleverly thought out. Recessed into the baseplate, out of harm's way - it can't be knocked or bumped. It's geared, and it's fast. It even has a clutch and ratchet, so it can't turn the wrong way when you're using it. The whole thing is over-engineered almost to the point of bloody-mindedness. Use two screws here? Nah, let's use four! Check out the strap-lugs - you could hang a small car from them. It's the Forth Bridge of cameras. When you shoot an M5, you can tell that Leitz put their heart and soul into the design. No expense was spared. I was looking at mine the other day, and noticed for the first time that even the numbers under the glass of the shot counter are engraved and filled with white paint. It was really the last time that Leitz seriously tried to compete with Canon and Nikon, and it shows in every aspect of the camera. I'm sure you'll love using yours. The M5 simply gets the job done, and gets out of your way - it has a transparency and understated sophistication I've not encountered in another camera. Nice review of the M5 here, if you've not seen it. Instagram Edited January 28, 2019 by colint544

It allows to hold camera to the eye, keep face straight and have both eyes open. While nose is not smashed by the camera. This stops me from considering M5 as camera I would use to walk with my camera to my face. This is what M is about. Otherwise SLR like HP is good... Edited January 29, 2019 by Ko.Fe. In these days of equality and anti discrimination the production of manufactured goods suitable for left handed use is still in the dark ages. I want a left handed (and left eyed) Leica so that I can keep both eyes open on the scene. Everything is designed for right-handed use. You see it even on pens and pencils, hold one in your left hand and read any printing on it, it’s upside down. colint544 Posted February 23, 2019 Share #13 Posted February 23, 2019 Agreed - many manufactured goods are designed with little or no thought for the left-handed/left-eyed, and the M5 is no exception. I've personally never had a problem with the eyepiece being slightly further away from the left edge than on the 'traditional' M cameras, but I guess that varies from person to person. As for the looks of the M5, come on - it's a purposeful picture-taking machine, especially in black chrome! Welcome, dear visitor!
