Telemetric Posted January 26, 2019 Share #1 Posted January 26, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I just bought a new Leica Elmarit 28mm f2.8 and if you move the focus ring with a normal “speed” all is ok but if you go from infinite to backwards veeeery slowly, it gets like stucked at 1.5 mts, sometimes at 2. The lense seems ok, I do not have any focusing problem and it focus to infinite correctly so my doubt is if the lense is ok or I have to send it back to leica for its replacement. I would appreciate if someone has a new Elmarit 28 and do the test for me. Thanks a lot in advance. Advertisement Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 Hi Telemetric, Take a look here Focus ring is stiff at 1.5 mts. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jdlaing Posted January 27, 2019 Share #2 Posted January 27, 2019 Work it back and forth for a few minutes and it should free up nicely. If it doesn’t... return it.
Telemetric Posted January 27, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted January 27, 2019 I have done it 3 minutes and, after, 5 minutes more and now is stiff in different meters... i will return it no monday. Thanks a lot!
TomB_tx Posted January 27, 2019 Share #4 Posted January 27, 2019 A few of the Leica lenses I have bought new over the decades have had such tight or rough spots in focusing, but the have all “worn-in” beautifully over the first month or so, and became wonderfully smooth. Telemetric Posted January 27, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted January 27, 2019 Three months like that, already. I will return it just in case.

Beware also that some Leica lenses do not wear-in that well. My experience is limited to two FLE lenses (50/1.4, 70/2) in this respect though. Anyway i would not keep a lens which behaves like yours personally. YMMV.

Good point - I’ve avoided the FLE models as I don’t like the complexity of the focus mechanism.
albertknappmd Posted January 27, 2019 Share #8 Posted January 27, 2019 when in doubt... return it! That has always been my motto... Albert 😀
Stein K S Posted January 27, 2019 Share #9 Posted January 27, 2019 (edited) Strange. My Elmarit 28 asph behaved exactly the same way... somewhat ¨stuck¨ halfway... now sold for other reasons. But no other of my lenses has shown anything like this. If I wanted to keep it, I would have returned it to get it fixed Edited January 27, 2019 by Stein K S
Telemetric Posted January 27, 2019 Author Share #10 Posted January 27, 2019 Thanks a lot. Maybe is normal in this model. The truth is you can use it without any problem.
Telemetric Posted January 27, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted January 27, 2019 I will return it anyway.
Reini Posted January 27, 2019 Share #12 Posted January 27, 2019 It should be smooth in both directions and not get stuck. My lens is running well. You do the best: send it back.
stephan54 Posted January 27, 2019 Share #13 Posted January 27, 2019 Mine is smooth too. Best to send it back.

Could you go from infinite to backwards to the other side very, but very slow (with a “normal” speed all is fine) just to see if is a common behaviour or not? (When i say slow is very very slow). Thanks a lot in advance.

Thanks a lot in advance. From 0,7 to infinity it is absolutely smooth. From infinity to 0.7 there is an ever so slight resistance at 1.5 Only noticed it now, never did in two years of shooting. I use it days on end while travelling. Edited January 27, 2019 by stephan54
Reini Posted January 27, 2019 Share #16 Posted January 27, 2019 (edited) With pleasure! I tried it three times very slowly (each about 10 seconds), there is no resistance or stop. Edit: But I have to say: It is not new, but the last version. Edited January 27, 2019 by Reini

I discovered it by luck but you do not notice nothing if you do not do it very very slow. This is the point, if you do not do it very slow you can not notice it. Thanks a lot. I am beginning to think that is its normal behaviour. Edited January 27, 2019 by Telemetric
Reini Posted January 27, 2019 Share #19 Posted January 27, 2019 Oh ... just move it, if it's not that bad. Whoever rests rustes! 😄
Telemetric Posted January 27, 2019 Author Share #20 Posted January 27, 2019 I really do not know what to do. It seems to be a normal behaviour in a lot of units, as I can read. Maybe I will send it back just in case. I have a lot of manual lenses (all the Loxia series from Zeiss) and I never saw something like that in any of them. I do not think the lense is a bad unit. In fact, I fo not have any problem in a normal use. But it costs a lot of money and I bought it new so I want what is expected from this lense. Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your help. Any other opinion will be appreciated
