Hello,

I just bought a new Leica Elmarit 28mm f2.8 and if you move the focus ring with a normal “speed” all is ok but if you go from infinite to backwards veeeery slowly, it gets like stucked at 1.5 mts, sometimes at 2.

The lense seems ok, I do not have any focusing problem and it focus to infinite correctly so my doubt is if the lense is ok or I have to send it back to leica for its replacement.

I would appreciate if someone has a new Elmarit 28 and do the test for me.

Thanks a lot in advance.

I have done it 3 minutes and, after, 5 minutes more and now is stiff in different meters

Not normal at all IMO. Beware also that some Leica lenses do not wear-in that well. My experience is limited to two FLE lenses (50/1.4, 70/2) in this respect though. Anyway i would not keep a lens which behaves like yours personally. YMMV.

Good point - I’ve avoided the FLE models as I don’t like the complexity of the focus mechanism.

Strange. My Elmarit 28 asph behaved exactly the same way... somewhat ¨stuck¨ halfway... now sold for other reasons. But no other of my lenses has shown anything like this.

If I wanted to keep it, I would have returned it to get it fixed

It should be smooth in both directions and not get stuck. My lens is running well.

You do the best: send it back.

Mine is smooth too. Best to send it back.

Would you make me a favour?

Could you go from infinite to backwards to the other side very, but very slow (with a “normal” speed all is fine) just to see if is a common behaviour or not? (When i say slow is very very slow).

Thanks a lot in advance.

From 0,7 to infinity it is absolutely smooth. From infinity to 0.7 there is an ever so slight resistance at 1.5

Only noticed it now, never did in two years of shooting. I use it days on end while travelling.

My one is only a couple of months old and barely used, and is smooth all the way through the range.

I do not have any problem at all. I discovered it by luck but you do not notice nothing if you do not do it very very slow. This is the point, if you do not do it very slow you can not notice it.

Thanks a lot. I am beginning to think that is its normal behaviour.

I really do not know what to do. It seems to be a normal behaviour in a lot of units, as I can read. Maybe I will send it back just in case. I have a lot of manual lenses (all the Loxia series from Zeiss) and I never saw something like that in any of them.

I do not think the lense is a bad unit. In fact, I fo not have any problem in a normal use. But it costs a lot of money and I bought it new so I want what is expected from this lense.

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your help. Any other opinion will be appreciated :)
