Pecole Posted January 23, 2019 Share #1 Posted January 23, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Next to the Leitz Leicameter, there was a large variety of "lightmeters" of various brands specifically (?) de signed for Leicas. I had quite a few in my Fontenelle collection, and I came incidentally across a series of photos these days. I thought it could be of interest for some of you. Here is a first selection. The first, illustrated on photos 1 and 2, is the most curious and must date from the early Leica times since this Bewi is still purely optical. Next is an image of various pieces branded Weston, Sixtus, Metraphot or Gossen. Quite interesting is the change of name of the Gossen Photolux to Ombrux when offered calibrated for Leica, and also the evolution the little Metraphot to the first Leica-Meter. alan mcfall Posted January 25, 2019 Share #3 Posted January 25, 2019 Great photos. I also have a collection of early lightmeters for the Leica. There are several versions of the Bewi and Leicascop optical extinction meters. The Bewi version was advertised frequently in the magazine "Die Leica", first starting in July 1931 and by Dec of that same year the version with scales for the Leica was for sale. Here is a photo of some early meters that I like. Leicascope extinction lower left already mentioned above. Bottom cener, a very early Metrophot selenium with f stop readings instead of seconds exposure. In 1933, Dr. Seigfreid Guggenheimer, the founder was forced by the government to change the name to Metraphot. (Wiki.org). The earliest ads show the Metraphot, so this may be before then. lower right, the model 627 Weston, susposed quite popular on Hollywood film sets. Top left, a very early, and bulky Weston 617, and top right the redesigned model 617 with rounded ends. Welcome, dear visitor! alan mcfall Posted January 25, 2019 Share #4 Posted January 25, 2019 Just adding a photo showing the cases, instructions and original boxes for a few of the meters. Included the LC60. I have some for the Ombrux, Electro Bewi, Sixtus and others too. Welcome, dear visitor! Pecole Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted January 25, 2019 Impressive, Alan! On the second photo, I see you have the same rounded meter with pivoting cover as mine. I was also interested in your small "Leicascop" extinctometer : I had one apparently similar called "Lios-Scop" (I did not publish the photo since it did not wear the name "Leica"), was it the same? Pyrogallol Posted April 18, 2019 Share #6 Posted April 18, 2019 (edited) There don’t seem to be any new postings to read today in the historica section, so here is a picture of the nice little Metraphot meter I got yesterday. It is working and the readings match my modern meter. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! April must be meter month. After last weeks purchase of a Metraphot, this week it’s an MR4 and a pre-war Drem Leicascop extinction meter. The MR4 seems to be working about right though it has a new LR9 1.5v battery which should not be quite right for readings. when fitting the MR4 to a camera the meter wheel lifts at the B setting but does not want to lock up by turning to the long speeds, it won’t turn there, but not a real problem fitting it.
alan mcfall Posted April 24, 2019 Share #10 Posted April 24, 2019 In my experience, the instruction pamphlet for the Leicascop is more rare than the extinction meter itself. Is there a date or other identifiers on it?
Pyrogallol Posted April 25, 2019 Share #11 Posted April 25, 2019 No, no date, but my breakfast table reading of Laney’s collectors’ guide has it listed on page 358 with other prewar extinction meters.
