JayBird Posted January 19, 2019 Share #7 Posted January 19, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for sharing the article Jaap. It was well written. The images were also very good. I fully appreciate reducing the load. When we went to Utah last fall, I thought about taking the CL and the Nikon D7100 with the 200-500 f5.6 zoom for wildlife / birds. In the end, I just took the CL. Turns out we did not see enough wildlife to justify having the Nikon along. The photos from the trip were fantastic. Even my wife noticed the quality difference over the Nikon. Here is a link to my Flickr albums if anyone would like to see them Arches NP , Bryce Canyon NP
wda Posted January 19, 2019 Share #8 Posted January 19, 2019 Thank you Jaapv for a highly educational article from which I learned a lot. Congratulations on your charitable workin the region. Extremely rewarding around. You have chosen a good balance of kit to meet your varied tasks. Beautiful photographs, often in challenging lighting conditions. Well done.
dfdann Posted January 19, 2019 Share #9 Posted January 19, 2019 Thanks for an excellent article. I also enjoyed the M8 photos on your web site. I still use my M8 for B&W. Makes good companion to CL. Cheers, Dan

scott kirkpatrick Posted January 19, 2019 Share #12 Posted January 19, 2019 Nice article and some great pictures. You say in the text that you got a picture of two wild dogs managing traffic as a pack of 20 crossed the road , but I couldn't find that one. I like the puppies, though. Judging from the panel of the Cessna you were flying in, that's the latest model, not something left over from the Beryl Markham days. Are all the short flights that you took as confidence-inspiring as that one?
jaapv Posted January 19, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted January 19, 2019 Unfortunately not. Botswana is a rich country with an up to date infrastructure, but elsewhere you tend to find Cessnas that might be considered modern- by the Wright brothers.A few images got lost in editing, I fear. jkcampbell2 Posted January 21, 2019 Share #15 Posted January 21, 2019 (edited) Great read and photos! Thanks for sharing your strategy on systems to cover such diverse photo opportunities and still be portable. Are your long lens shots all hand held? Tripod? Monopod? Bean bag? Anything you'd do differently next time? Cheers, jc Edited January 21, 2019 by jkcampbell2
jaapv Posted January 21, 2019 Author Share #16 Posted January 21, 2019 All handheld, the Pana stabilization works wonders For the time being this is my combo of choice. If Leica should provide proper long glass on the CL, I would go for two CL bodies and ultra-long zoom and revert to using a bean bag. I don't see that happening anytime soon. Petercoll Posted January 24, 2019 Share #17 Posted January 24, 2019 Thank you Jaap. I have been much enjoying looking at your report and pictures quite often, and admire your work in Africa.
colmac Posted January 27, 2019 Share #18 Posted January 27, 2019 Having visited Malawi way back in 1970 your report initiated fond memories albeit of the south around Nsanje, Mlanje, Zomba plateau and Monkey Bay. Hastings Banda drove a 600 Merc so I may just have photographed Mr Everlasting when his cavalcade passed through Zomba; that was before Lilongwe became the capital. Should I ever go back, I will follow your gear recommendations. Sláinte..
