Hey guys,

at the end of the month I’ll start traveling to Thailand, Bali, Japan, Hawaii and the USA. Since the long travels I want to keep my camera bag as small and lightweight as possible.

Since the 35 Lux FLE comes with a hood thread protection and a round lens cap I’d love tu keep the lens hood at home.

Has anyone used this lens without any lens hood and encountered a way worse behavior regarding flares?

Thank you!

I went hoodless for the first time a couple of weeks back as a trial and the first two photo's I took both had flare to some extent. Not surprising given the direction of the sunlight and the angle I chose to shoot at.   Lens hooded again.

The hood doesn't add a great deal to the size and weight of the lens, but it does a brilliant job of protecting that large front element. I leave mine on all the time, as much for peace of mind as anything else. You can use the hood with a filter too.

A few years ago, I travelled all over western China with my M240 and FLE35 single lens only, (hooded).

Each day I made sure I placed the rectangular cap in the same trousers pocket, and then proceeded to go about without worrying about lens cap, nor worrying about

finger prints on the front lens element.  This was quite a liberating photo-gear experience, and have repeated this often.

I left the hood on my M10 for a while, but it added size in my bag and I felt like it made the camera unbalanced... not so much when on the m240, but the 35 FLE is a big lens on the M10. In the end, I took the lens hood off and used the ring. I use a high quality UV filter to protect the element.

I haven't noticed any flare or IQ differences hood on or off. Leave it home, keep it simple, IMO.

Take the hood! The protection is worth it, especially if you hang the camera from your shoulder.

The hood also allows you to place the camera in a bag without having to put the lens cap on to protect the front element. I leave the lens-hood cap off as it is comes off easily and I have already lost two of them.

You don't need the sunshade and neither does the lens. Keep it simple. No sunshade, no filter, no lens cap - the camera won't have all those gee-gaws on it that attract attention and make the camera look weird. When traveling you won't need to worry about losing them. Sunshades actually can cause more damage since the stick out and can catch on stuff. When  I went to Japan (from USA) in 2017 I took the 35mm Lux asph, no shade + the 21mm f2.8 Elmarit, no shade. All worked just fine. Good luck with your travels and your photography.
