Not the same thing, Andy. Linear raw means that the data are encoded in a rectilinear format. The data themselves do not need to form a straight curve.

 

I think the discussion is drifting quite a bit from the original question. Hence thanks for the first paragraph of your post, which is quite to the point. :)
